Süper Lig 2008/09

The Turkcell Süper Lig 2009/10 was the 52nd season of the highest Turkish division in men's football. It began on August 7, 2009 with an away game of the reigning champions Beşiktaş Istanbul against Istanbul BB (1: 1) and ended on May 16, 2010 with the 34th and final matchday. Turkish champions became Bursaspor for the first time . This was the first time in 26 years that a club that did not come from Istanbul became Turkish champions.

Ankaraspor was excluded from the Turkish Football Association (TFF) for the season and had to participate in the second division the following season. On October 7, 2009, the Turkish Football Association announced that all 34 Ankaraspor games would be rated 0: 3. Denizlispor and Diyarbakırspor also had to go to the second division .

Attendees

For the 2009/10 Süper Lig, the 15 clubs remaining from the previous season were joined by the three promoted teams from the last second division season . The climbers were the second division champions Manisaspor , the runner-up Diyarbakırspor and the play-off winner Kasımpaşa Istanbul . While Manisaspor and Kasımpaşa achieved direct promotion back to the Süper Lig with their promotion, Diyarbakırspor returned to the Süper Lig after four years of abstinence.

Season course

Upper third of the table

To their great surprise, Bursaspor became Turkish champions of the 2009/10 season. After Trabzonspor they were the second championship team that came from outside Istanbul . The master coach was Ertuğrul Sağlam , who trained Beşiktaş Istanbul before his time in Bursa . Already in the first half of the season Bursaspor played in the top third of the table and followed Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray Istanbul in third and two points behind in the winter break. On Matchday 22, the Crocodiles were one point behind Galatasaray and made it clear to the Istanbul clubs that they wanted to play for the championship. Two game days later, the team took the lead with a 3-0 away win against Diyarbakirspor decided by the Turkish Association. The standings remained in the hands of Bursaspor until the 31st matchday, but the team played against Galatasaray on this matchday and Fenerbahçe was again leaders shortly before the season ended. Bursaspor followed Fenerbahçe until the last match, matchday 34. Bursaspor won the Turkish championship for the first time in the club's history with a 2-1 home win against Beşiktaş and the help of Trabzonspor, who fought a 1-1 draw with Fenerbahçe at the Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium .

Fenerbahçe Istanbul brought Christoph Daum to the Bosporus for the fourth time before the start of the season . After two seasons without a championship title, the traditional club wanted to rely on an experienced coach with Daum who is well versed in the Turkish league. The season started very well for the Blue-Yellows , Fenerbahçe Istanbul won eight of eight games, making it clear that there is no way around them. On the 34th matchday they went one point ahead of the first in the 34th matchday. The opponent was Trabzonspor and a week earlier Trabzon defeated Fenerbahçe 3-1 in the cup final. On the last day of the match, Trabzonspor should let Fenerbahçe lose the title again. Fenerbahçe played against Trabzonspor 1: 1 and thereby lost the championship that was believed to be safe. In addition, strange scenes played out just before the end of the game. The stadium announcer falsely reported during stoppage time that Bursaspor would be drawing and Fenerbahçe would be champions. This was not the case, Bursaspor ended the game 2-1 against Beşiktaş. Therefore the Fenerbahçe fans celebrated their championship victory and a few minutes later the stadium announcer corrected the situation and announced that Bursaspor had become Turkish champions.

With Galatasaray Istanbul, another title contender disappointed his supporters this season. In the summer Frank Rijkaard was signed and this should usher in a new era. The red and yellow played a good first half of the season. They were second one point behind Fenerbahçe in the winter break and were leaders in the second half of the season on matchday 23. After successive point losses against Trabzonspor, Fenerbahçe and Sivaspor, Rijkaard's team lost connection to the top of the table and was third at the end of the 2009/10 season.

The double winner of the previous season Beşiktaş Istanbul could not build on the performance of the previous season. The Black Eagles were eliminated early in the UEFA Champions League and the Turkish Cup. During this season, the team failed to become leaders.

midfield

Trabzonspor had a mixed season. They signed the Belgian Hugo Broos as their new coach before the start of the season . He was fired after a 3-1 defeat against Kasımpaşa Istanbul on matchday 13. His successor was Şenol Güneş and he steadily went up again. The season ended Trabzonspor with the 5th place but was Turkish Cup winner and was thus qualified for the UEFA Europa League . Istanbul BB played their best season in their third year in the Süper Lig. The fourth team from Istanbul finished sixth. Eskişehirspor also improved in the table compared to last year and seventh. Kayserispor, however, fell a few places. Tolunay Kafkas' team made a good impression in the first half of the season. On the 16th matchday they were leaders due to the better goal difference in front of Fenerbahçe. The second half of the season built the team and ended the season in 8th place. Before the end of the season, Tolunay Kafkas announced that he would be leaving the club.

Antalyaspor, Gençlerbirliği Ankara (trained by Thomas Doll ), MKE Ankaragücü, Kasımpaşa Istanbul and Gaziantepspor were among the teams that were able to secure relegation early on.

Relegation battle

Up to the 32nd matchday Manisaspor was one of the potential relegators. Since the games against Ankaraspor were rated 3-0, Manisaspor made the league perfect with the game on matchday 32. The season went badly for Sivasspor, runner-up in the previous season. Even before the start of the league, the team was unable to qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League . Bülent Uygun was released on matchday 8 . Up to this day of play, the team had only got four points and was in 17th place. His successor was Muhsin Ertuğral , Ertuğral could not help the team and was fired on the 26th match day. The third coach of the current season was Mesut Bakkal . He managed, together with the team, on the 33rd match day to secure the league after a 1-1 draw against Eskişehirspor.

Diyarbakırspor came back to the 2nd division as a promoted team . In addition to the internal problems, the club had problems with the Turkish Football Association. The club felt cheated by the referee in some games and was of the opinion that the association wanted to downgrade the team to the 2nd division. The fans were also a problem for their own team. After fans threw objects onto the field in their own home game against Bursaspor and hit the linesman, this game was canceled. The game was decided as a 0-3 away win for Bursaspor. The next matchday there was again trouble with the Diyarbakırspor fans. In the away game against Istanbul BB, the fans stormed onto the field in the 87th minute and were again responsible for the fact that their own team lost points. The game was rated 1-0 for Istanbul BB. On the 33rd match day, the relegation of Diyarbakirspor was sealed.

From a sporting point of view, Denizlispor did not play a good season. The team was 17th on matchday 10 and could not leave it until the end of the season. Only Ankaraspor was worse, as they were transferred from the Turkish Association to the 2nd division for the 2010/11 season and were therefore no longer allowed to play games. The penalty was imposed due to an illegal manager change to MKE Ankaragücü. Until the punishment, Jürgen Röber was a coach at the capital club.
