Hakkı Tolunay Kafkas (born March 31, 1968 in Ankara ) is a former Turkish soccer player and current coach.
Player career
Tolunay Kafkas played for many clubs: PTT , Keçiörengücü , Diyarbakırspor , Erzurumspor , Konyaspor , Trabzonspor , Galatasaray Istanbul , Bursaspor and Denizlispor in Turkey.
In Austria he played for ASKÖ Pasching from 2002 to 2004 , in 2004 for LASK Linz and from 2004 to 2005 for VfB Admira Wacker Mödling .
Tolunay Kafkas played 33 times for Turkey . He took part in the 1996 European Football Championship with the national team.
Coaching career
From the 2007/08 season , Kafkas was the coach of the Turkish first division club Kayserispor for three seasons . In his first season with the Red-Yellows , he won the Turkish Cup in 2008 . At the end of the season, he announced to part ways with the club.
For the 2010/11 season, he then accepted an offer from league rival Gaziantepspor . With this club he immediately reached fourth place in the table in his first season. So he took part in the UEFA Europa League for the next season . Here you failed in the third qualifying round to the Polish representative Legia Warsaw . The start in the Süper Lig failed with four defeats in four games. Kafkas had a tense relationship with the fans from the start of the season. After the series of defeats, the fans demanded his dismissal. Thereupon Kafkas announced his resignation after the third match day, but he could be changed by the club management. After the lost game on matchday four, the same situation arose, so that Kafkas finally left the club.
During the winter break he was the coach of the Turkish U-21s for the second time .
In the spring of 2013, Trabzonspor's long-time coach , Şenol Güneş , resigned from his position. As one of the coaches who were already active as a player at the club, Kafkas was immediately traded as a possible successor. Kafkas had mentioned several times that he would like to coach Trabzonspor one day. So the club management offered him the coaching position. Kafkas agreed and signed a 3.5 year contract on January 29th.
With the end of the professional leagues in summer 2013, Trabzonspor elected a new club president with İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu . As one of his first acts, he introduced Mustafa Reşit Akçay as the new head coach of Trabzonspor and declared the cooperation with Kafkas to be over.
For the 2013/14 season, Kafkas took over the first division club Kardemir Karabükspor . On February 23, 2015, his contract was terminated by mutual agreement with the club's management.
In July 2015 he took over the first division club Kayserispor as head coach for the second time in his career. He signed a one-year contract with the Central Anatolians. After Kayserispor, Kafkas succeeded Cihat Arslan at Akhisar Belediyespor in early September 2016 . He resigned from his position in March 2017.
