Denizlispor is a football club from the southwestern Turkish provincial capital Denizli . After nine years in the Turkish TFF 1st Lig , the club rose again to the Süper Lig in 2019 . The team, also known as Horozlar ("The Cocks"), plays under green and black jerseys in home games and plays their games in Denizli Ataturk Stadı , which has a total of 18,745 seats.

history

Before founding

The association was founded unofficially on September 17, 1922. Up until this year there was hardly any sport in the city of Denizli , apart from wrestling , so that the city got a big change from a sporting point of view with the (unofficial) founding of a football club. The founders, who were also players at the same time, Kenan Bey , Kadri Özbaş , Şemsi Bey , Mustafa Naili Bey and Hamdi Bey founded the Denizli İdman Yurdu club .

The city's first, unofficial football game was played a week after it was founded. Kadir Abanoğlu , Kadri Özbaş , Acemoğlu Rıza Bey , Fehmi Bey , Vasfi Bozkaya and Öğretmen Nevzat Bey were the first football players. Since there were no soccer fields yet, training began on October 1, 1922 on neutral ground. To demarcate the goals, two jackets were placed on the floor to enable a soccer game.

Eight years later, in 1930, the club was expanded, training with the also unofficially newly founded club Menderes Gençlik . In 1936 the two clubs Denizli İdman Yurdu and Menderes Gençlik merged . Denizlispor was announced as the new name . Until 1966 they did not take part in any official leagues because they did not yet have a license to play.

The 20th century

Professionalization

In the early 1960s, the Turkish Football Association decided to start a project that would allow all provinces of Turkey to participate in professional football. In the course of this, the Denizli province decided to meet the requirements of the Turkish Football Association and to provide a steadfast team for professional football.

The team was officially founded on May 26, 1966. At a general meeting of the Denizlispor , Çelik Yeşilspor and Pamukkale Gençlik clubs , the decision was made to submit an application to the Turkish Football Association. It was also agreed to report the name Denizlispor to the association. This agreed to the request, so that Denizlispor was included on July 14, 1966 in the second Turkish league . As a result of the professional status achieved, the association was restructured and rebuilt. The team received significant support from the Governor of Denizli Province, Nezih Okuş , and the then President of the Turkish Football Association, Orhan Şeref Apak .

The club colors were black and green. The first president was Dr. Samim Gok ; the other club members were Fuat Özen , Birol Ünder , İlhami Süner , Şükrü Sarıoğlu , Atilla Sayıner and Yakup Ünel .

After the board was established, the search for a head coach for the team started. Three members of the seven-person board of directors went to Izmir to present Altan Santepe with a contract offer. He presented the three members with 30 conditions that had to be met over time. When the members agreed to Santepe's demands, the first coach was found.

After 1966

The first official football game was played away against Beyoğluspor on September 11, 1966 , which they lost 3-1. The player Ati Göksü scored the first goal for Denizlispor in an official game in the 20th minute of the game. The first win came a week later against Altındağspor , when they could win the game 1-0.

In the first season in the history of the club, they finished 7th. The following three seasons ended the season in second and third.

First promotion to the Süper Lig

After 17 years in the second division they became champions at the end of the 1982/83 season and thus rose to the first division for the first time . The first season they finished on a remarkable 7th place. A season later they were 16th in the league, which would normally have meant relegation to the second division. However, the Turkish Football Association decided to increase the first division to 19 football teams in the following season, so that Denizlispor could remain first class.

Between Süper Lig and 2nd League

At the end of the 1987/88 season , after five years in the highest Turkish league, they were relegated back to the second division. After six seasons in the second division, the runner-up in the 1993/94 season was again promoted to the top division. However, you could only hold the class for two seasons, so after three poor seasons you relegated to the second division again. As short as the stay in the first division was, the faster the return to the House of Lords succeeded. In the 1997/98 season you just missed promotion when you failed only in the play-offs. A season later they rose as runner-up, level on points with the master Vanspor , in the first division, so that Denizlispor took part again in the competition of the 1st Lig after two years of abstinence.

The 21st century

UEFA Intertoto Cup 2001

After the renewed promotion to the 1st Lig, the club achieved considerable success, u. a. the semi-finals in the Turkish Cup in the 2001/02 , 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons . In the 2000/01 season , the Turkish association registered for the UEFA Intertoto Cup (UI Cup for short) . The reason why one was reported as 11th place was that the actually qualified clubs had seen the UI Cup as "unnecessary" and as an "additional burden" and therefore voluntarily waived their participation.

Denizlispor got the Bosnian-Herzegovinian club NK Čelik Zenica drawn in the first round . In their international debut, they lost the first leg away 1-0, although they played a good game with a young team. Despite a 1-0 lead, the second leg was still lost 3: 5, so that they were eliminated after the first round.

2002/03 UEFA Cup

The highlights of the club's history are the 2001/02 to 2004/05 seasons . With the coach Rıza Çalımbay they occupied in the 2001/02 season for the first time in the Süper Lig the 5th place in the table, which entitled to participation in the UEFA Cup , and thus the best placement in the entire history of the club.

In the first round you could defeat the French representative FC Lorient , when it was 3: 3 after the return leg. Due to the away goals rule , Denizlispor made it into the second round. The Czech record champions Sparta Prague were drawn as opponents in the 2nd round . The first leg in Prague was lost 0-1 despite a big fight. Denizlispor were no longer given realistic chances, partly because Sparta Prague became champions in the Czech Republic for the fifth time in a row this season. The second leg in Denizli was won 2-0 with two goals from Mustafa Özkan , so the sensation from the Turks' point of view was perfect.

Denizlispor  TurkeyTurkey 1-0 FranceFrance  Olympique Lyon 0-0 1: 0 (1: 0)

In the third round they met a French representative again, because with Olympique Lyon they again had a champion as opponent who was eligible to play for the UEFA Cup as third from the group stage of the Champions League . Denizlispor had home rights in the first game and had to replace some injured and yellow-banned players through the triple operation ( championship , league cup and UEFA cup). In Denizli they fought a 0-0 draw and counted on chances for the round of 16 despite the seemingly overpowering team Lyons ( French internationals like Grégory Coupet and Sidney Govou ). In addition, the market value of the Olympique Lyon squad was more than 20 times that of Denizlispor's squad. The second leg in Lyon started promisingly for the Turkish underdog when Denizlispor's Torgarant Mustafa Özkan scored 1-0 in the 6th minute of the game. The defense with Servet Çetin , Roman Kratochvíl , Bülent Ertuğrul and above all goalkeeper Dirk Heinen played an outstanding game and prevented a lot of scoring opportunities. After 90 minutes - from a Turkish point of view - the miracle happened and they won the game 1-0 away and made it to the round of 16. When the team flew back to Denizli, the fans celebrated them for hours at the reception. Together with Beşiktaş Istanbul , who also made it to the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup, both teams were celebrated like national heroes in Turkey.

In the round of 16, they were clearly defeated in the first leg of FC Porto , who coached stars like Deco , Ricardo Costa , Ricardo Carvalho and José Mourinho . At halftime you could still hold a 0-0, but broke in the second half and had to admit defeat to the better team in all respects with 1: 6. In the second leg, they drew 2-2 against the eventual UEFA Cup winners, so they said goodbye to the European stage with honor.

From this point on, Denizlispor made a name for itself nationally and was henceforth a "favorite scare" of the four big clubs in Turkey ( Galatasaray Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul , Beşiktaş Istanbul and Trabzonspor ).

Relegation 2005/06

In the 2005/06 season Denizlispor played the most important game of the entire season on the last day of the game. With a 1: 1 (0: 0) against Fenerbahçe Istanbul (with coach Christoph Daum ) the club not only achieved relegation, but also prevented their opponent from winning the championship. An exceptional performance during the 106-minute game (16 minutes of stoppage time due to several rolls of toilet paper thrown onto the field by the spectators) was provided by goalkeeper Souleymanou Hamidou , who blocked seemingly unsustainable shots at his goal. After Mustafa Keçeli gave Denizlispor the lead in the 89th minute, Tuncay Şanlı equalized in the fifth minute of added time. After this game, the team of Fenerbahçe Istanbul was heavily criticized and mocked by the media for their recklessness and the championship they believed to be safe - the press described the game as Yüzyılın travması (“The trauma of the century”) and Denizli faciası (“The disaster from Denizli ”).

Since that game Denizlispor has been seen as the "feared opponent" of Fenerbahçe Istanbul.

Relegation from the Süper Lig and renaming of the club

After 11 very successful years (see above), the club was relegated to the TFF 1st Lig at the end of the 2009/10 season .

On September 21, 2013, an agreement was reached with Tekden Hospital on a three-year name sponsorship . After about a year, however, the contractual relationship was terminated by mutual consent. During this time the club ran under the name Tekden Denizlispor . After the contract was terminated, the addition Tekden was removed from the club name.

On February 16, 2019, a name and jersey sponsorship was concluded with the company Abalıoğlu from Denizli until the end of the 2018/19 season. During this time, the club was accrued under the name Abalı Denizlispor for a total of 13 championship games.

Resurgence after nine years

The 2018/19 season was very successful for Denizlispor. After the early change of coach, Yücel İldiz replaced Osman Özköylü after the 8th matchday , the team experienced an upswing. With the new coach, they only lost one game in 24 matches, so that after nine years of abstinence they were promoted to the Süper Lig . On the penultimate matchday, Denizlispor won 6-0 against Karabükspor in the sold-out Denizli Ataturk Stadı and thus made the early promotion perfect. With the victory against İstanbulspor on the last day of the match, the championship of the TFF 1. Lig could be celebrated in addition to the promotion to the top class.

Shortly after the promotion, it was announced that a five-year name and jersey sponsorship had been concluded with the Germany-based company Yukatel .
