Nevzat Güzelırmak (born January 1, 1942 in Izmir ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Göztepe Izmir , he is very strongly associated with this association. On the fan and club side, he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. When he was playing, he was called İngiliz (English: The English) because of his British style of play and his strong nerves . He stands with players like Fevzi Zemzem , Gürsel Aksel and Ali Artuner for the glory days of Göztepes in which this club was one of the first Anatolian teams to compete with the three big Istanbul clubs Galatasaray , Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş . With 313 first division appearances for Göztepe, after Gürsel Aksel (370), he is the player with the second highest number of Süper Lig appearances in the club's history. Several sports complexes, tournaments and a street are named after him in his hometown and main place of work, Izmir.

Family and childhood

Güzelırmak was born as the son of Macedonian Turks in Kahramanlar , a district of the western Turkish city of Izmir . Both strands of the family emigrated from parts of what is now Macedonia to another part of the Ottoman Empire during the Balkan Wars . His mother's family came from Üsküp , while his father's family came from Kumanova . His maternal grandfather was killed by Greek soldiers during the Greek occupation of Izmir in Menemen .

In Güzelırmak's childhood, the population of Izmir consisted almost entirely of war displaced persons from Crete , Western Thrace and Macedonia . Since Güzelırmak's family on the father's side had been involved in cattle breeding in their old homeland, the family tried to continue this trade after moving to Izmir. Güzelırmak's father was also involved in the cattle trade and therefore traveled frequently to Istanbul . After one of his many trips, he brought a plastic ball for his son Nevzat. Little Nevzat played street football for several years with this ball, which is made of a very thick rubber and is therefore very robust and heavy. Güzelırmak lost his father when he was five, so his mother was forced to support the family on her own.

Güzelırmak grew up in the district of Kahramanlar on which was adjacent to the exhibition and fairgrounds of Izmir or included it. This area was destroyed by the fire in Izmir , which is why there was a lot of free space. At that time you had a clear view of the Alsancak Stadium from Kahramanlar . The children and young people in the surrounding area used these free and unused areas as football fields. The Izmir tennis club was also located in Kahramanlar . The operators of the tennis club gave away their worn tennis balls to the children in the vicinity. In addition to the heavy rubber ball, Güzelırmak and his street friends also played soccer with these worn tennis balls. In addition, the tennis club operators occasionally allowed the children to use the sports facilities. Since Güzelırmak had heard back then that the then great football star Metin Oktay , who also came from Izmir, had refined his precise shooting technique through exercises on a shooting wall, the young Güzelırmak used the training wall on the tennis grounds to also improve his shooting technique.

Güzelırmak's love for football was sparked in 1953. At that time, Hungarian films, folklore and the games of the Hungarian national team were shown in the Hungarian pavilion on the exhibition grounds . Among the games shown, the 6-3 away win and the 7-1 home win for the English national team were shown several times. This made sure that little Güzelırmak knew the game commentaries by heart and admired such stars as Ferenc Puskás , József Bozsik and Nándor Hidegkuti .

Player career

Youth teams

After Güzelırmak was played street football for a long time, he began to play after elementary school for the youth team of the club Gençlerbirliği Izmir (renamed Çayırlıbahçe SK in 1952 ). After Güzelırmak played for this club for a while without a valid license, word of his football skills spread around the area. This led to the fact that with the help of a neighbor he was issued a player license.

1957 completed Çayırlıbahçe SK against the reserve team of Göztepe Izmir on the Halk Sahası a test game. Abbas Göçmen , the talent scout Göztepes and the coach of the youth team also appeared for this game to convince themselves of Güzelırmak's qualities. In this game Güzelırmak scored two goals and otherwise convinced. When leaving the field, Göçmen spoke to him and invited him to tomorrow's training in Göztepe. In his first training session, he was included in the junior team's squad. During his first years with Göztepe, Güzelırmak attended Namık-Kemal-Gymnasium. This school had a very good school team, in which later national players such as Ayhan Elmastaşoğlu , Ali Artuner and Ertan Öznur were. So Güzelırmak played next to the youth team from Göztepe, also for the school team.

Goztepe Izmir

At Göztepe he was apprenticed to older players like Gürsel Aksel , Ruhi Karaduman and Emin Çandarlı . He was also trained and promoted by head coach Ruhi Karaduman. Among the older players he learned a lot from Aksel, with whom he had played for 13 years and shared a room in the training camps for twelve years. Although Güzelırmak had trained or played for Göztepe and its youth team for a few years, he did not achieve the breakthrough he had hoped for for a long time. Although all coaches and teammates gave him great potential, he did not succeed in showing this talent on the field. According to his own statements, his breakthrough came during his one-month stay with the Turkish U-18 national team. After these missions in the Turkish U-18, Güzelırmak returned with a new self-confidence, according to Aksel. For the 1960/61 season he was finally accepted into the professional team by the new head coach, the Hungarian András Kuttik . He made his professional debut on the 1st day of the season against Kasımpaşa Istanbul . In this game of August 27, 1960 Güzelırmak was set up by Kuttik in the starting line-up and played over the full length of the game. After this game he immediately became a regular player and completed 37 of the possible 38 league games of his team.

In the summer of 1961, Kuttik was replaced by his assistant coach Adnan Süvari as head coach after Kuttik had suitable for the coming season with Beşiktaş Istanbul . Süvari had been active as a football player for Göztepe himself and began working as an assistant coach at Göztepe during the last season. With his then very modern conception of football, this coach was to shape Turkish football and establish Göztepe as one of the most important Turkish clubs for over a decade. Under this coach Güzelırmak kept his regular place. The first season in the Süvari era, the 1961/62 season , ended in 7th place in the table. In the 1962/63 Millî Lig season , the league system changed from a single-track league to a two-track league. In the end, only six teams from two groups qualified for a subsequent final round. Göztepe missed qualifying in this final round with one point and ended the season in March 1963. In the next season, Güzelırmak improved with his team and ended the season in 5th place in the table, the second-best first division placement in the club's history. Güzelırmak had to start his military service together with his teammate Çağlayan Derebaşı in early April 1964 and was therefore out of the rest of the season. Furthermore, he was therefore only available to his team for the next seasons with special permission. His team continued to improve in the first season without him, in the 1964/65 season , and repeated with the 4th place in the table, the best first division placement in the club's history and thus qualified for the second time in a row for the trade fair cup , the predecessor competition of UEFA -Cups .

In April 1964, the then Turkish chief of staff, Cevdet Sunay, issued a rule change, according to which professional football players were allowed to play for their clubs during their military service. Due to this regulation, Güzelırmak completed two trade fair cup games in September 1964, but failed the rest of the season due to his military service. At the beginning of the 1965/66 season, he again played trade fair cup games for his team. Since his club was eliminated in the first round against TSV 1860 Munich , there were two games again. He was his team only in March 1966, after completing his military service, available and completed all the remaining players of the season. The season ended this time with 5th place in the table. In addition, the final in the Turkish Football Cup was reached for the first time in the club's history . Here the team failed against arch rivals Altay Izmir . The next season he finished with his team in 4th place in the table. Güzelırmak played a key role in both successes and was regularly nominated for the Turkish national team in the same season due to his convincing performances .

In the 1967/68 season Güzelırmak made international attention with Göztepe with an unprecedented success in the club's history. In addition to the renewed 4th place in the table in the 1st league, they reached the 3rd round in the trade fair cup. In the first round, Göztepe surprisingly prevailed against the preferred Belgian representative Royal Antwerp and in the second round even against the Spanish top club Atlético Madrid . In the 3rd round the tournament came out against the Yugoslav representative Vojvodina Novi Sad .

In March 1968 Güzelırmak suffered a serious injury and had to stay away from football for over eight months. So he missed the first few months of the new season and did not participate in the game again until December. With his team, the successes of the previous season were surpassed this season. For the first time in the club's history, they won the Turkish Football Cup. Güzelırmak's team prevailed against top club Galatasaray Istanbul in the final . In the trade fair cup, Olympique Marseille , FC Argeş Piteşti , OFK Belgrade and Hamburger SV were eliminated in succession and thus reached the semi-finals. Hamburger SV withdrew from the competition and made it possible for Göztepes to reach the semi-finals. In the semifinals, the club was then defeated by the Hungarian representative Újpesti Dózsa SC . To date, this success was the greatest that a Turkish team could achieve in the European cup competitions. The league ended this time in 7th place in the table, but the team qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup by winning the cup for the coming season .

In the 1969/70 season he successfully defended the Turkish Football Cup and thus achieved the second success in this competition. In the European Cup Winners' Cup, the team made it to the quarter-finals and was eliminated from the top Italian club AS Roma . In the summer of 1970, the team won the President's Cup with a 3-1 win over Fenerbahçe Istanbul as the first non-Istanbul team . While Güzelırmak could not call up his usual performance last season due to an injury, he delivered his usual performance again this season. In the 1970/71 season he was eliminated with his team in the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 2nd round against the Polish representative Górnik Zabrze , but the league was finished in third place in the table and thus reached a new club record. The following years Güzelırmak lost with Göztepe the connection to the top clubs of the highest Turkish league. Güzelırmak himself played until the summer of 1975 and then ended his active football career. Two years later Göztepe rose for the first time in the club's history in the second highest Turkish league, in today's TFF 1. Lig and could then no longer build on his most successful time.

National team

Güzelırmak played for the Turkish national youth teams for the first time, during a U-18 encounter against the Bulgarian U-18s. After five missions for the Turkish U-18s, he began to play for the Turkish U-21 national team from 1965 . Just one month after his U-21 international debut, he was invited to the squad of the Turkish national team for the first time in his career by the Turkish national coach Sandro Puppo . Here he made his senior international debut in a friendly against the Hungarian national team . In December 1962 he traveled with the Turkish selection to Ethiopia to take part in a number of friendly games. So he completed with the A selection of his country on December 16, 1962 against the Ethiopian national team his second international match. Three days later he completed another test match against the Ethiopian national team with the second selection of the Turkish national team, which was then known as the Turkish B national team.

After these first international matches, he played for both the U-21 team and the senior team until 1965. He then played until 1968 exclusively for the senior national team in his country.

In 1965 he took part in the ECO-Cup with the national team and finished second with his team behind Iran . Two years later he won this cup with his team.

He made his last international match on March 13, 1968 during a preparatory game against the Tunisian national team . In total, he completed 18 full internationals for Turkey and scored one goal.

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Güzelırmak switched to coaching and worked for various first and second division clubs until the end of 1990.

His first coaching station was his old club Göztepe Izmir . Güzelırmak took over the club, which had meanwhile been relegated to the 2nd Futbol Ligi , in 1976 as head coach and supervised it until 1978. He then worked from 1979 to 1980 at arch rivals Altay Izmir as an assistant coach, assisting first Candan Tarhan and then Serpil Hamdi Tüzün . At the end of March 1980 he left Altay and took over the club Goztepe, which was in danger of relegation in the first division. With this club he missed relegation with one point on the last day of the match.

For the 1981/82 season he was introduced as the new head coach at the first division side Boluspor . The first season he finished with the club in 12th place in the table. Here he worked with players like Rıdvan Dilmen , Fatih Uraz and Sercan Görgülü , who would later become important players. In the second season at Boluspor he and his team ended the season completely surprisingly in 4th place in the table and achieved second-best first division placement in the club's history.

Despite the successful last season, Güzelırmak and Boluspor could not agree on any further cooperation. So Güzelırmak left the club and instead took over the league rivals and promoted Denizlispor . He led the new league to a respectable 7th place in the table in the season. But after he began to play with his team against relegation towards the end of his second season for this club, he was dismissed after the third last match day.

The next season he took over the second division club Yeni Afyonspor . After he played with this club, contrary to expectations, instead of promotion against relegation, he left this club. The next season he started with the second division Konyaspor . At this club he was replaced by Özkan Sümer during the season . This then led the club to the second division championship and thus to the first first division participation in the club's history.

In the summer of 1988 Güzelırmak was head coach at the first division side Bursaspor . With this club he finished the season in 5th place in the table and repeated the second-best first division placement of this club to date. Despite this success, the collaboration was not continued beyond the season. Instead, Güzelırmak took over the first division club in his hometown Altay Izmir the next season . With this club he played against relegation throughout the season. This was prevented on the last day of the game by the better goal difference against Eskişehirspor . At the end of the season he moved within the league to city rivals Karşıyaka SK . Even with this club he did not succeed in placing himself safely in the league. After the league game against direct relegation rivals Gençlerbirliği Ankara was lost 5-1 at home, Güzelırmak was dismissed and replaced by Kadri Aytaç . This then secured the league.

For the 1990/91 season he took over for the third time in his coaching career Göztepe Izmir, the club with which he achieved great success in playing times. With the then second division side, he delivered a neck and neck race with arch rivals Altay Izmir over the entire season . At the end of the season Güzelırmak's team was left behind, was only runner-up and so missed the hoped-for promotion. At the end of the season he left this club again. The following season he took over the second division Kayserispor . With this club he sat confidently in the second division season 1991/92 from the beginning of the table and ended the season with 69 points and 15 points ahead of second-placed Petrol Ofisi SK as second division champion. Although he had achieved the set season goal, there was still no further collaboration.

In the next season he took over the Istanbul first division side Sarıyer SK . After a season he changed clubs again and this time coached the newly relegated club Aydınspor . After only four months of activity, he left this club and immediately took over Bursaspor for the second time in his career. This time he trained for a year and then handed over his office to his assistant coach Nenad Bijedić . This time, too, he immediately took over another club, Kayserispor, and looked after it until October 1995.

For the 1996/97 season he trained Adana Demirspor for two months . In February 1997 he took over the relegation-threatened club Kuşadasıspor . After the league was achieved with this club, the cooperation continued. In September 1997 Güzelırmak resigned from this position and no longer works as a trainer.
