He was one of the most important players in Galatasaray in the 1960s and was involved in many important successes of his club during this time. With 222 games he is in the list of players with the most premier league appearances for Galatasaray in 21st place. When he left Galatasaray he was the player with the second most goals in the club's history with 70 league goals behind Metin Oktay and is currently in 7th place in the list of players with the most Süper Lig goals for Galatasaray . When he was playing, he was also known by his nickname Yavru Ayhan ( Ayhan the boy ). He comes from a family of footballers who became known in Turkish football as Elmastaşoğlu Kardeşler ( Elmastaşoğlu brothers ).

Childhood and youth

Elmastaşoğlu was born in Alsancak , a central part of the western Turkish port city of Izmir , in 1941 . Here he began playing football on the gravel square of the Gazi elementary school on Sevinç pastane . Here he played street football with his brothers Enver , Nail and Ayfer , all of whom were supposed to lead to professional careers. Later he was accepted into the youth department of Altay Izmir together with his brothers .

Altay Izmir

From the spring of 1959 Elmastaşoğlu took part with the professional Altays team in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig). Up to this point in time there was no national league in Turkey, only regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, of which İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League) was the most renowned. In the first season of the Millî Lig , the championship was played in two rounds. In the first round, the league system was divided into two separate groups. In the second round, the two group winners decided the championship among themselves in a final with a return leg. Elmastaşoğlu took part in the competition with his team in the white group . Here he took third place in the table with Altay and missed the opportunity to become the first Turkish football champion. Elmastaşoğlu established himself as a regular player in this first season. He made his professional debut against Beykozspor on March 22, 1959 and scored his first goal in this encounter. In the season Elmastaşoğlu completed 13 of the possible 14 league games. In the second season of this league, the then eighteen-year-old Elmastaşoğlu completed 33 league games and scored eleven goals.

Transfer hiccups between Altay and Galatasaray

Through these performances he aroused the interest of several Istanbul clubs. The traditional club Galatasaray Istanbul became interested in Elmastaşoğlu quite early on and contacted the player early on. The two Galatasaray coaches Gündüz Kılıç and Coşkun Özarı personally took care of Elmastaşoğlu's commitment and tried to get Altay to dissolve Elmastaşoğlu's current contract. Previously, they agreed with Elmastaşoğlu for a change. After Altay reluctantly approached transfer negotiations, Galatasaray signed an amateur player deal with Elmastaşoğlu. After these developments, Altay referred to a still valid contract with Elmastaşoğlu, lodged a complaint with the Turkish Football Association and threatened to take the matter up to FIFA . Regardless of these developments, Elmastaşoğlu took part with Galatasaray in a preseason tournament and made his club debut in the game of June 28, 1960 against Gençlerbirliği Ankara . He then played for his new club in the Cemal Gürsel Cup . In mid-July, the Turkish Football Association contacted Galatasaray regarding the change of Elmastaşoğlu and Cenap Doruk and asked for an opinion. A little later, the national association initiated an investigation into the dodgy transfer settlement against Galatasaray. Altay stated that Galatasaray Elmastaşoğlu had paid 20,000 Turkish Lira for the move and that the amateur player contract that had been concluded was therefore invalid. As a result, the association did not hand over a license for their new clubs to the players concerned until the facts were clarified. After this development, Altay, who still had an ongoing contract with Elmastaşoğlu, applied for a license for the player and received it. Elmastaşoğlu, who had returned to Izmir, completed a day later for Altay in the league game against Altınordu Izmir a game. Due to this commitment, it was no longer possible according to the rules at that time to use Elmastaşoğlu for another club in the current season. Still, Galatasaray brought Elmastaşoğlu to Istanbul and tried to use him in a game against arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Meanwhile, the association's investigative committee concluded its investigations at the end of September and imposed a six-month suspension on Elmastaşoğlu. Following a revocation, his sentence was overturned two months later, but his move to Galatasaray has not yet been recognized. Galatasaray negotiated again with Altay in December 1960 and this time reached an agreement. After the association had allowed the change after a long hesitation, Elmastaşoğlu signed a professional contract with Galatasaray in early January 1961.

Galatasaray Istanbul

Elmastaşoğlu played regularly for Galatasaray Istanbul from the second half of the 1960/61 season . At this club Elmastaşoğlu came to many missions despite the large number of high quality and seasoned offensive players such as Metin Oktay , Suat Mamat , Uğur Köken , Ahmet Berman , Recep Adanır and Nuri Asan and was carefully built up by head coach Gündüz Kılıç . By the end of the season he had completed 13 of the possible 20 league games. Over the entire season, his team fought head-to-head for the Turkish championship with arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul and finished the league with one point less than runner-up. In the next season Elmastaşoğlu lost his regular place due to persistent form weakness and completed 18 league games over the entire season. He also contracted a herniated disc in November, which meant that he had to be treated and was absent until January 1962. He reached the Turkish championship with his club that season and won his first title at club level. Also in the 1962/63 season , the club succeeded in the Turkish championship and thus the title defense. Since in the summer of 1962 Metin Oktay, a striker who had emigrated, returned and the club had also strengthened itself with the offensive players Tarık Kutver and Kadri Aytaç and Elmastaşoğlu had to pause several times due to injury, he was denied a permanent place. In addition, Elmastaşoğlu began his military service during this season and was therefore only available to his team with special permission for the next seasons. His team also won the newly introduced Turkish Football Cup this season , becoming both the first Turkish cup winner and the first Turkish double winner. In addition, Elmastaşoğlu's team made it to the quarter-finals in the European Cup of National Champions of the 1962/63 season and thus achieved the best placement of a Turkish team to date in this competition in particular and in all European club competitions in general. Due to his military service Elmastaşoğlu fell out almost the entire season 1963/64. In April 1964, the then Turkish chief of staff, Cevdet Sunay, issued a rule change, according to which professional football players were allowed to play for their clubs during their military service. After this rule change Elmastaşoğlu completed three of the remaining five league games. His club missed defending their title in the league, but won the Turkish Football Cup for the second time. Elmastaşoğlu intended to return to his hometown Izmir after his military service, which ended in February 1965, and to get married there. As a result, his old club Altay tried to sign him for the coming season and therefore got in touch with Galatasaray. Galatasaray then stated that Elmastaşoğlu's expired contract will automatically be extended for the period in which Elmastaşoğlu could not be used due to his military service. So Elmastaşoğlu decided to continue his career at Galatasaray. Due to the upcoming games of the military national team, Elmastaşoğlu received almost the entire first half of the 1964/65 season no release. Only at the end of his military service in March 1965 did he return to the team squad. He applied to Galatasaray again for his release, but was forced to stay with this association after being rejected. After ten months of abstinence in the game against İstanbulspor on matchday 20, he played again for Galatasaray and immediately established himself as a top performer. Just a month after his comeback, he became a Turkish national player. His club again fell short of expectations in the championship, but won the Turkish Football Cup for the third time in a row. With the 1965/66 season Elmastaşoğlu could play unhindered for his club and was an undisputed regular player for five years. In the seasons 1965/66 and 1966/67, the team again missed the championship, but won the Turkish Football Cup for the fourth time in a row in the first season mentioned. After four untitled seasons in the Turkish championship, long-time coach Gündüz Kılıç was replaced by Bülent Eken in the summer of 1967 . Even under this new coach Elmastaşoğlu kept his regular place. After the hoped-for Turkish championship failed to materialize with this coach, Tomislav Kaloperović was hired as head coach in the summer of 1968 . Under this coach, the championship succeeded which Elmastaşoğlu could win this title for the third time. Elmastaşoğlu contributed seven goals in 28 games to this success and was considered to be a great assisting goalgetter Metin Oktay. After he ended his career in the summer and could no longer act as team captain, Uğur Köken was chosen as his successor. Köken himself brought Elmastaşoğlu into the conversation as the new captain. In the new season, the team experienced a very restless season in which the coach and some players had several controversies. Several players were temporarily suspended from the team, including Elmastaşoğlu. This also made the possibility that Elmastaşoğlu Köken could replace as team captain superfluous. After these developments, Kaloperović declared that if he continued to work with Galatasaray beyond the current season, he would demand the sale of Elmastaşoğlu and his teammates Talat Özkarslı , Mehmet Oğuz and Ergün Acuner . Elmastaşoğlu's team ended the season without a title and reached the quarter-finals as the only bright spot in the European Cup in 1969/70 .

Elmastaşoğlu was not taken into account in the team planning even beyond the end of the season, although the club hired a new head coach in Brian Birch . The decisive factor in this condition was that Elmastaşoğlu had to serve a suspension from the game at times. He was part of the team under Birch until the summer of 1973, but no longer played a major role within the company and only came to sporadic missions as a supplementary carrier. He and his club were Turkish champions three more times in the 1970/71 , 1971/72 and 1972/73 seasons , although he did not play a game in the last season mentioned.

Sakaryaspor

In the summer of 1973 Elmastaşoğlu left Galatasaray after twelve years and moved to the then second division club Sakaryaspor . There is evidence that he played football for another year at this club.

National team

Elmastaşoğlu started his national team career during his time at Altay Izmir with a commitment for the Turkish amateur national team. As part of the Mediterranean Games in 1959, he was nominated for this selection and made his international debut in the first encounter against the Lebanese amateur national team. With his team Elmastaşoğlu finished second behind the Italian team and was thus silver medalist.

After Elmastaşoğlu was not considered for four years after participating in the Mediterranean Games, the Turkish national team, he was appointed to the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team on October 9, 1963 . For the U-21s, he then made his debut in a friendly against the Romanian U-21s selection . Elmastaşoğlu also scored his team's winning goal to make it 1-0. After he had completed two more games for the U-21s in the following year and scored three goals in these games, he was appointed to the squad of the Turkish national team for the first time in April 1965 . As part of a World Cup 1966 qualifier against the Portuguese national team , he was nominated by then national coach Sandro Puppo and made his debut in this game. For the next five years he was one of the constantly nominated national players. On October 16, 1966, the Turkish national team played a friendly encounter against the national team of the USSR in the 40,000-spectator and sold-out Olympic Stadium in Luzhniki . Here Elmastaşoğlu played the full length, scored the 2-0 of his team and was celebrated by the trade press for his performance in the 2-0 victory of his team.

In 1965 he took part in the ECO-Cup with Turkey and finished second. This cup was won two years later. During the 1967 tournament he also scored his first international goal in an encounter against the Pakistani national team .

He made his last international game on November 16, 1969 during a World Cup 1974 qualifier against the USSR national team.
