Brian Birch (born November 18, 1931 in City of Salford ) is a retired English football player and coach . Through his successful coaching activity for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with this club. He led Galatasaray to the championship three times in the 1970/71 , 1971/72 and 1972/73 seasons and was the first coach in Turkish football to win the Turkish championship three times in a row .

Player career

Birch started playing for Manchester United's youth division when he was 14 . At the age of 17 he was finally accepted into the professional squad by legendary Manchester coach Matt Busby and finally made his debut for the first team on August 27, 1949 in the league game against West Bromwich Albion . Here he was one of those young players who became known as " Busby Babes ". The following seasons he eke out in the squad of the professional team rather a reservist existence and could, except for a phase in the 1950/51 season in which he was able to score four goals in nine games, never establish himself as a regular. After another league game he was sold to Wolverhampton Wanderers towards the end of the 1951/52 season for a transfer fee of £ 10,000 .

He stayed with the Wolves for only nine months and then moved on to Lincoln City . It was at this club that Birch achieved the breakthrough he had hoped for. He scored 15 goals in 56 league games in three seasons. In the summer of 1955 he moved to Boston United , but moved to AFC Barrow after one season . During his time at Barrow, he continued to improve and came in two seasons in 60 league games on 27 goals. After the three other stations Exeter City , Oldham Athletic and AFC Rochdale , he ended his career in the summer of 1962 at the age of 31.

Coaching career

Birch began to work as a coach after his playing career and looked after the clubs Boston United , Mossley AFC and Ellesmere Port Town FC . He also coached clubs in Australia , New Zealand and Hawaii . From 1967 he began to work for the Blackburn Rovers as a youth coach. By the summer of 1970 he rose to the Rovers as assistant coach of the professional team and also led coaching seminars for The Football Association , the English football association.

In the summer of 1970 he was introduced as the new head coach at the Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul . Here he said in his first interview when asked if he knew Galatasaray that he only knew the club president. At Galatasaray, he worked closely with the technical director Coşkun Özarı from the start . In addition to organizational tasks, Özarı also took on many coaching duties, partly led training and put together the team for the coming season before each season. Since Birch did not get a coaching license for the Turkish league for a long time from the Turkish Football Association , Özarı also officially appeared as head coach and Birch only as assistant coach. With this coaching constellation, Birch started with his team by winning the TSYD Istanbul Cup, which was held in the preseason . In the league, Galatasaray started with a 0-1 away defeat against Bursaspor . In the following 13 game days, the team shows a sovereignly successful course. The coaching duo Birch-Özarı brought eight wins and five draws out of these 13 games and took the lead on matchday 14. After the game on matchday 15 against PTT Ankara could be won 7-1 in a spectacular way, the first half of the season ended as autumn champions. In the second half of the season Birch's team defended the championship lead until the end of the season, but his team fought head-to-head for the Turkish championship with the reigning champions and arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul . With the 24th matchday Galatasaray extended the lead over Fenerbahçe to four points, but Fenerbahçe reduced the difference to two points with a win on the 25th matchday against Galatasaray. After a 0-1 defeat on Matchday 27 against MKE Ankaragücü and a 0-0 draw against Samsunspor on Matchday 28 Galatasarays, Fenerbahçe closed on points and were second only because of the poorer goal difference. But after Galatasaray could win the remaining two games confidently, it ended the season as Turkish champions. In the 1971/72 season , Birch's team stayed away from the top of the table for a long time, but they kept a small point gap to the leaders. It was only on the last day of the first half of the season that Galatasaray took over the lead and finished the first half of the season as autumn champions. In the second half of the season they immediately awarded the championship lead for two matchdays to arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . On the 18th matchday, the championship lead was taken over again. In the remaining game days, Galatasaray sat away from their pursuers and secured the title defense in the Turkish championship on matchday 28 before runner-up Eskişehirspor . Following the season, Birch and his team won the President's Cup , the then Turkish Supercup, against Ankaragücü . In contrast to the two previous seasons, Birch's team was in the 1972/73 season from the first day of the game in the top three places in the table. On 5th place in the table his team took the lead for the first time, but awarded it to Fenerbahçe after just one match day. On matchday 13, Galatasaray took the lead for the second time and finished the first half of the season as autumn champions for the third time in a row. In the second half of the season Birch and his team increased their points lead against their closest rivals Fenerbahçe and secured the Turkish championship for the third time in a row with a 1-0 home win against Fenerbahçe, three game days before the end of the season. This made Galatasaray the first team ever to succeed three times in a row and Birch became the first coach to achieve this. This championship record was only repeated in the 1998/99 season and so far only once by Fatih Terim with Galatasaray and after another season it was broken with four championships in a row. The coaching duo Birch-Özarı also won the Turkish Cup in the 1972/73 season and thus also managed the Turkish double victory this season . Birch's team won the club's second double victory.

In the 1973/74 season , Birch started immediately with his team as the leader of the table and took it over several times again until the winter break. On the last day of the first half of the season, the championship lead and thus the autumn championship was awarded to arch-rivals Fenerbahçe. In the second half of the season, the Birch team always lost touch with the championship lead and ended the season in the two-point rule that was valid at the time, with an eight-point lead over first-placed Fenerbahçe, far behind in fifth. This season his team could only win the 50th Yıl Kupası , a trophy organized in honor of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Turkey . After this disappointing season, Birch left the club and was replaced by his compatriot Done Howe . An important reason why he left Turkey was the fact that in the past three years Birch has been brought before the disciplinary committee several times by the Turkish Football Association .

After his departure from Galatasaray Birch began in November 1974 to coach the Egyptian first division club Union Sporting . He led this club from 12th place in the table to 6th place in the table within three months. After this activity, Brich also trained with al Zamalek SC, one of the most successful clubs in Egypt. During his work in Egypt, however, Brich tried to advance his career again in Turkey. This failed due to the fact that the Turkish association around association president Hasan Cemal Polat Birch no longer issued a license because of its previous rule violations.

Then Birch coached the Swedish club Helsingborgs IF until autumn 1977 . In the spring of 1978 he took over the Greek clubs Ethnikos Piraeus and managed to lead the table with the club.

Although Birch was faced with a new signing again and again after his departure from Galatasaray, there was no further cooperation until the summer of 1980. Although Birch stayed in the championship with Galatasaray, he was the only one of the Istanbul clubs who was Trabzonspor's closest pursuer . At the end of the season, Galatasaray finished the league in 3rd place in the table. After Birch got off to a bad start to the 1981/82 season with his team , he was released in late November 1981.

From March 1984 Birch began to coach the Greek club Panionios Athens .

For the 1987/88 season he took over the position of head coach at the Turkish first division club MKE Ankaragücü. He trained this club for only three match days and then resigned from his position.
