Club history
The club was founded in 1901 in Barrow-in-Furness , Cumbria . The club played in the Lancashire Combination Division Two and the Lancashire Combination Division One from inception until 1921. In 1921 the club won Combination Division One. The AFC Barrow played from 1921 to 1972 continuously in professional leagues, since then Barrow has played in the two highest levels of non-league football .
Barrow AFC was one of the founding members of the Football League Third Division North in 1921 . The club could not record any successes worth mentioning, but held itself consistently for many years in the same league. In 1958, the club rose to the new Football League Fourth Division . For the time being, the club remained professional football, in the season 1966/67 Barrow managed to rise again to the Third Division. After three seasons, the next step backwards followed with relegation to the fourth division. Even in this league, the club could not hold out for long, in 1972 for the first time the forced relegation (not re-elected) followed in the Northern Premier League , one of the fifth highest division in England at the time. Barrow was no longer represented in professional football for the first time in the club's history. Since then, the club spent many years in the Conference National and Conference North, a total of five times Barrow was promoted to the Conference National.
After the club had completed the 2007/08 season in Conference North on fifth place, which entitles them to participate in the playoff games for promotion to the Conference National, the team defeated the AFC Telford United and Stalybridge Celtic in the playoffs . The playoff final held at Pirelli Stadium , home of Burton Albion , in front of 2530 spectators, ended with a 1-0 win for Barrow. The winning goal scorer Matt Henney helped the club for the first time since 1999 to return to the Conference National . In the 2008/09 season, the FA Trophy was won for the second time since 1990 . In the final, the team won 2-1 after extra time against Stevenage Borough . 2020 succeeded as champions of the National League , the rise in the EFL League Two and after 48 years to return to the English Football League .
