The FC Stevenage (officially Stevenage Football Club ) is an English football club from Stevenage , who in the fourth-class EFL League Two play.

history

The club was founded in 1976 under the name “Stevenage Borough Football Club” and began playing in low-class English amateur leagues. In 1980 the club moved into its new home stadium, Broadhall Way , which has a capacity of around 7,100, and then played in the “United Counties Football League”. Four years later the club was included in the second division of the Isthmian League and a year later they rose to the first division. But only two years later you had to relegate to the second division. The club recovered from this setback and rose to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League in 1992. In 1994 Stevenage Borough was represented for the first time in the Football Conference , in which they even won the championship two years later. But the club was denied promotion to the Football League Third Division because the stadium did not meet the requirements of the professional league. In the later years, the club drew attention in the FA Cup and lost in 1997/98 in the fourth round only in the replay against the first division club Newcastle United . In 2002 they were in the final of the FA Trophy for the first time , but the game against Yeovil Town was lost 2-0.

2004/05 Stevenage Borough then reached the playoffs in the Football Conference and only failed in the final just 1-0 against Carlisle United and missed promotion. Also in 2006/07 the promotion was missed, but the club won the FA Trophy for the first time with a win in the final against the Kidderminster Harriers . In the 2008/09 season, the club failed again in the playoffs and had to give way to Cambridge United in the semifinals . A year later, Stevenage was the leader of the table for a long time and made it to the Football League Two as champions several game days before the end of the season . The defense of the FA Trophy title was missed, however, and they only narrowly lost the final against AFC Barrow . After promotion to Football League Two, the club was renamed to its current name "Stevenage FC".
