Club history

The club was founded in 1909 in Stalybridge , Greater Manchester . The club played in the first two seasons in the Cheshire Amateur League, the club was added to the Lancashire Combination in 1911. The Combination's greatest success was a fifth rank in 1917, Stalybridge played in the Central Division for the next four years. The club was one of the founding members of the Football League Third Division North in 1921 . However, Celtic withdrew after two years from the league and then played for many years in the Cheshire County League. During this time, Stalybridge won several lower class trophies such as the Challenge Shield, Cheshire County League and Midland League, but the Celtics still failed to return to professional football. Then the club played five years in the North West Counties Football League. Stalybridge won the first division of the North West Counties League in 1984 and 1987 and made it to the Northern Premier League , which was then the sixth highest division in England. During this time, some successes could be celebrated, such as the Cheshire Senior Cup, Presidents Cup and the Northern Premier League. The team played in the 2001/02 season in the Football Conference , but rose again after a year. In 2004, Stalybridge became one of the founding members of Conference North , in which the team has played since. While the club remained only four points above the relegation ranks in the 2006/07 season, the 2008/09 Celtics just missed the play-offs with 70 points.
