Clash of Realities

The Clash of Realities - International Conference on the Art, Technology and Theory of Digital Games ( CoR ) is an artistic-scientific research conference on computer games that takes place annually in November at the TH Köln .

The conference deals with the aesthetic development, theoretical analysis and cultural mediation of digital games, especially from the perspective of game design, game studies and media education. In addition, the relationship between games and the older audiovisual media of film and television as well as issues relating to the conservation of digital games are dealt with.

The content is in the hands of a program committee chaired by the two directors of the Cologne Game Lab , Björn Bartholdy and Gundolf S. Freyermuth . Representatives of the Institute for Media Research and Media Education of the TH Köln , the International Film School Cologne (ifs), the Institute for Media Culture and Theater of the University of Cologne , Electronic Arts , Eyes and Ears of Europe and the AG Games are involved. The event is funded u. a. from the TH Köln, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW , the city of Cologne and Electronic Arts.

The international keynote speakers at the research conference in recent years have included a. Tracy Fullerton (University of Southern California), James Paul Gee (Arizona State University), Janet H. Murray (Georgia Tech), Frans Mäyrä (University of Tampere) and Eric Zimmerman (New York University).

history

The conference was launched in 2006 by Winfred Kaminski and Martin Lorber and took place every two years until 2014. During this time it was organized by the Institute for Media Research and Media Education at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences , today Cologne University of Applied Sciences ; in cooperation with Electronic Arts and, since 2010, the Cologne Game Lab . The focus at that time was on the fields of educational science, pedagogy, psychology, sociology and medicine.
