Gundolf S. Freyermuth (born January 3, 1955 in Hanover ) is a German - American media scientist and journalist .

Life

Freyermuth is professor for "Media and Game Studies " at the TH Köln and - together with Björn Bartholdy - founding director of the Cologne Game Lab .

He studied general and comparative literature (AVL), German , American and history at the Free University of Berlin and completed his studies with an MA. 1985-1990 he was a research assistant Eberhard Lammert at the Institute of AVL FU Berlin, 2004, he received his doctorate in Lämmert to Dr. phil. From 2004 to 2014 he taught as a professor for applied media studies (formerly named: Aesthetics and Communication ) at the ifs international film school in Cologne , where he continues to teach media studies.

In 2010 Freyermuth founded the Cologne Game Lab together with Björn Bartholdy . Since 2012 he has been publishing the series "Bild und Bit. Studies on digital media culture" at transcript Verlag - together with Lisa Gotto . Since 2015 he has been - together with Björn Bartholdy - chairman of the program committee of the international computer game conference " Clash of Realities ", which takes place annually at the TH Köln . Since 2019 he has been a member of the award committee "Digital Games and Interactive Contents" of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW .

Prior to that, he was a member of the Film Funding Committee of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW from 2009-2010 and from 2011 to 2018 he was the representative of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW for the development of new media funding and chairman of the advisory committee of the pilot funding project for innovative audiovisual media content. From 2008 to 2010 he was also a member of the jury for the Innovation Award of the Commissioner for Culture and Media .

Parallel to his academic work, Freyermuth has been working as a specialist author for literature, film and digital media since 1980. 1981–1982 he was editor of the cultural magazine TransAtlantik , published by Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Gaston Salvatore , 1983 to 1990 reporter for stern magazine , 1992–1994 chief reporter for Tempo magazine . Between 1994 and 2004 he worked as a freelance writer in the USA.

He published several non-fiction books and novels as well as around 400 articles, reports and essays etc. a. for Berliner Zeitung , Frankfurter Rundschau , Los Angeles Times , Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Süddeutsche Zeitung , Tagesspiegel , Die Welt , Financial Times Germany , Der Spiegel , Die Zeit , Cinema .

Freyermuth is a German-American citizen, married and has two children.
