Football League Fourth Division

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Football League Fourth Division was from 1958 to 1992 the fourth highest division within the Football League and at the same time the fourth highest league in English football as a whole. With the introduction of the FA Premier League in 1992, the Fourth Division dissolved and the Third Division became the fourth English division. Currently the fourth division is referred to as Football League Two .

Overview

Before the introduction of the Premier League in 1992, the four highest placed in the final table rose to the third division. The bottom of the table had to relegate to the Football Conference depending on the economic situation of the following teams and thus lose his official status as a professional team. Automatic relegation to the Football Conference did not exist until 1987.

The Fourth Division was founded in 1958, when the twelve best clubs of the Third Division South and Third Division North united to form the Third Division and the remaining clubs formed the Fourth Division.

The Fourth Division was as Division Four , League Fourth Division or jokingly referred to as the cellar League : (English basement division called).
