The Football League Fourth Division 1987/88 was the 30th season of the fourth highest English football league . The top three clubs Wolverhampton Wanderers , Cardiff City and Bolton Wanderers went straight to the Football League Third Division. The clubs in positions four to six played together with the fourth from bottom of the third division in play-off mode for fourth promotion place. Swansea City secured it .

Newport County , last season in the Third Division, had to relegate bottom of the table for the second time in a row. Lincoln City , champions of the Football Conference, played for him the following season .
