The top three clubs Exeter City , Grimsby Town and Southend United rose directly to the Football League Third Division. The clubs in places four to seven played in play-off mode for fourth promotion place. Cambridge United secured this .

Relegated Colchester United was replaced by Darlington FC the following season .
