The Protestant village church Nitzow is a late Gothic brick church in the Nitzow district of Havelberg in the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the Evangelical St. Marien St. Laurentius Congregation Havelberg in the Prignitz parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

The village church in Nitzow is a late Gothic brick building that probably dates from the 15th century. The elongated, originally presumably two-aisled nave closes with a five-eighth closure that is shifted from the axis of the nave and is flush with the south wall. The west tower, made of field stone and brick masonry, presumably comes from a previous building and is divided into pointed arches with slender, pointed-arch groups and coupled sound openings . The building is provided with buttresses on the nave and polygon and shows simple pointed arch windows. The ship is accessed through portals on the south side.

A comprehensive renovation took place in 1860, when the main cornice, the eastern nave gable and the stepped tower gable were renewed. The structure suffered severe damage in World War II and was repaired from 1954. The church roof was renewed in 1990. Another extensive renovation was carried out in 1997 and 1998 in particular. A winter church with a tea kitchen was set up under the gallery.

The vault inside the ship was replaced by a flat ceiling after it collapsed during the Thirty Years' War . In the polygon, the Gothic rib vault on triangular services is still preserved. The nave is connected to the choir via a pressed, round-arched triumphal arch . A piscina has been preserved in the eastern area of the north wall of the ship .

Furnishing

A two-story altarpiece from around 1660 was restored in 1860 and 1958. It shows a painting of the Lord's Supper and auricular style cheeks . A wooden pulpit from 1607 was also restored in 1958 and has a basket that rests on an octagonal support. The paintings in the panels depict Christ, three evangelists with a book and Luke with a palette. A bronze bell was cast around 1410, three more in 1965. The organ was a work from the 19th century and was damaged in 2002 because of severe damage replaced by an electronic instrument.
