Football League Third Division 1989/90
^ Football League Second Division 1990/91

The Football League Third Division 1990/91 was the 64th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Cambridge United became third division champions and the second and third placed Southend United and Grimsby Town as well as, after play-off successes against Brentford FC and Bolton Wanderers , the Tranmere Rovers also rose to the Football League Second Division . For the four promoted teams in the following third division season 1991/92, the second division clubs West Bromwich Albion and Hull City, which are ranked in the table below, only took two of the places (caused by the expansion of the Football League First Division from 20 to 22 participating clubs). Crewe Alexandra , Rotherham United and Mansfield Town had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these three clubs, the fourth division champions FC Darlington and behind them Stockport County and Hartlepool United took the vacant positions in the following season 1991/92 . In addition there were fourth-placed Peterborough United and the play-off winner Torquay United for the third and fourth promoted to the third division.
