The Football League Third Division 1982/83 was the 56th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Portsmouth FC became third division champions, and Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, behind them, also rose to the Football League Second Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1983/84, the second division clubs Rotherham United , Burnley FC and Bolton Wanderers, ranked in the table below, took their places. From the Third Division in the Football League Fourth Division dismount had the Reading FC , the AFC Wrexham , the Doncaster Rovers and Chesterfield FC . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions FC Wimbledon and behind them Hull City , Port Vale and Scunthorpe United took the vacant positions in the following season 1983/84 .
