The Football League Third Division 1980/81 was the 54th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Third division champion was Rotherham United and next to it, Barnsley FC and Charlton Athletic rose to the Football League Second Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1981/82, the second division teams Preston North End , Bristol City and Bristol Rovers ranked in the table below took the places. From the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Divisiondescend had to Sheffield United , Colchester United , the Blackpool and Hull City . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions Southend United and the Lincoln City , Doncaster Rovers and Wimbledon FC, placed behind them , took the vacant positions in the following season in 1981/82 .
