Baron Brancepeth
Baron Brancepeth , of Brancepeth in the County of Durham , was a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once in the Peerage of England and in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Awards
For the first time on November 3, 1613, the title in the Peerage of England to Robert Carr, 1st Viscount Rochester was bestowed, together with the parent title Earl of Somerset . This was an influential favorite of King James I and on March 25, 1611 was made Viscount Rochester . In 1613 he was involved in a successful murder plot against his adversary at court, Sir Thomas Overbury, and was thereupon convicted of murder, imprisoned and pardoned in 1622. Since he had no sons, the title expired on his death on July 17, 1645.
In the second award, the title was awarded on August 31, 1866 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Gustavus Hamilton-Russell, 7th Viscount Boyne . In 1855 he had inherited the titles 7th Viscount Boyne and 7th Baron Hamilton of Stackallan , which were given to one of his ancestors in the Peerage of Ireland in 1717 and 1715 , respectively. The barony of Brancepeth, in contrast to its Irish titles, was connected to a hereditary seat in the House of Lords until 1999 . Today's title holder has been his descendant Gustavus Hamilton-Russell, 11th Viscount Boyne as 5th Baron , since 1995 .
