The Football League Third Division 1981/82 was the 55th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Burnley FC became third division champions, and Carlisle United and Fulham FC , who were behind them, also rose to the Football League Second Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1982/83, the second division clubs Cardiff City , AFC Wrexham and FC Orient, ranked in the table below, took their places. From the Third Division in the Football League Fourth Division dismount the needed FC Wimbledon , Swindon Town , Bristol City and FC Chester . Instead of these clubs, the Fourth Division champions Sheffield United and the Bradford City , Wigan Athletic and AFC Bournemouth placed behind them took the free positions in the following season 1982/83 .

From this season the three-point rule applied .
