The Football League Second Division 1995/96 was the fourth season of the Football League Second Division as the third highest English football league and 69th third division season overall. Third division champions were Swindon Town and next rose the second-placed Oxford United and after play-off successes against FC Blackpool and Notts County the sixth-placed Bradford City in the Football League First Division .

For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1996/97, the three second division clubs FC Millwall , FC Watford and Luton Town ranked in the table below . Carlisle United , Swansea City , Brighton & Hove Albion and Hull City had to relegate from the Second Division . Instead of these four clubs, the fourth division champions Preston North End , behind them Gillingham and Bury FC and the play-off winners Plymouth Argyle took the vacant positions in the following season 1996/97 .
