^ Football League Second Division 1991/92

The Football League Third Division 1991/92 was the 65th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Following the introduction of the Premier League in 1992, it was then replaced by the Football League Second Division and continued to exist as the fourth division as the fourth highest division. Third division champion was Brentford FC and also rose to second-placed Birmingham City and, after play-off successes against Huddersfield Town and Stoke City , Peterborough United in the new Football League First Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1992/93, the three second division clubs Plymouth Argyle , Brighton & Hove Albion and Port Vale, ranked in the table below, took the places. Bury FC , Shrewsbury Town , Torquay United and Darlington FC had to relegate from the old to the new Third Division . Instead of these four clubs of Fourth league champions took the following season 1992/93 FC Burnley the behind-ranking Rotherham United and Mansfield Town and the play-off winners Blackpool the free positions.
