The Football League Third Division 1961/62 was the 35th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Third division champions were Portsmouth FC and the second-placed Grimsby Town also rose to the Football League Second Division . For the two promoted in the following third division season 1962/63, the two in the table below ranked second division Bristol Rovers and Brighton & Hove Albion took the places. Torquay United , Lincoln City , Brentford FC and Newport County had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions FC Millwall and the Colchester United , AFC Wrexham and Carlisle United placed behind them took the vacant positions in the following season 1962/63 .
