The Football League Third Division 1985/86 was the 59th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Reading FC became third division champions, and Plymouth Argyle and Derby County, behind them, also rose to the Football League Second Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1986/87, the second division clubs Carlisle United , Middlesbrough FC and Fulham FC, ranked in the table below, took their places. Lincoln City , Cardiff City , Wolverhampton Wanderers and Swansea City had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions Swindon Town and those placed behind them Chester City , Mansfield Town and Port Vale took the vacant positions in the following season 1986/87 .
