The Football League Third Division 1960/61 was the 34th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Third division champion was FC Bury and second-placed FC Walsall also rose to the Football League Second Division . For the two promoted teams in the following third division season 1961/62, the two second division clubs FC Portsmouth and Lincoln City ranked in the table below . The Tranmere Rovers , Bradford City , Colchester United and Chesterfield FC had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions Peterborough United and the placed behind them Crystal Palace , Northampton Town and Bradford Park Avenue took the free positions in the following season 1961/62 .
