The Football League Second Division 2000/01 was the ninth season of the Football League Second Division as the third highest English football league and 74th third division season overall. Third division champions were the Millwall FC and next to the second-placed Rotherham United and, after play-off successes against Stoke City and Reading FC, the fourth-placed FC Walsall rose to the Football League First Division .

For the three promoted in the following third division season 2001/02 the three in the table below ranked second division Huddersfield Town , Queens Park Rangers and Tranmere Rovers took the places. Bristol Rovers , Luton Town , Swansea City and Oxford United had to relegate from the Second Division . Instead of these four clubs, the fourth division champions Brighton & Hove Albion , behind them Cardiff City and Chesterfield FC and the play-off winners FC Blackpool took the vacant positions in the following season 2001/02 .
