The Football League Third Division 1978/79 was the 52nd season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Third division champions were Shrewsbury Town and in addition, Watford FC and Swansea City, ranked behind, rose to the Football League Second Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1979/80, the second division teams Sheffield United , FC Millwall and Blackburn Rovers, ranked in the table below, took the places. Peterborough United , FC Walsall , Tranmere Rovers and Lincoln City had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these clubs in the Fourth Division champions participated in the following season 1979/80 Reading FC and the behind-placed Grimsby Town , FC Wimbledon and FC Barnsley one the free positions.
