The Football League Third Division 1979/80 was the 53rd season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Third division champions were Grimsby Town and in addition, Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday , who were behind them, rose to the Football League Second Division . For the three newly promoted the shunting in the table below second division participated in the following third-League 1980/81 season Fulham FC , Burnley FC and Charlton Athletic one places. From the Third Division in the Football League Fourth Division dismount the needed Bury FC , Southend United , Mansfield Town and FC Wimbledon . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions Huddersfield Town and behind them FC Walsall , Newport County and FC Portsmouth took the vacant positions in the following season 1980/81 .
