The Football League One 2005/06 was the second season of the English Football League One , at the same time the 14th season of the second highest division of the Football League after the introduction of the Premier League and 79th third division season in total. Third division champions were Southend United and next rose the second-placed Colchester United and, after play-off successes against Huddersfield Town and Swansea City, the fifth-placed Barnsley FC in the Football League Championship .

The three second division clubs Crewe Alexandra , FC Millwall and Brighton & Hove Albion, ranked in the table below, took the places for the three promoted teams in the following third division season 2006/07 . Hartlepool United , Milton Keynes Dons , Swindon Town and FC Walsall had to relegate from Football League One . Instead of these four clubs, the fourth division champions Carlisle United , followed by Northampton Town and Leyton Orient and the play-off winners Cheltenham Town took the vacant positions in the following season 2006/07 .
