William Louis "Billy" Sharp (born February 5, 1986 in Sheffield ) is an English football player who has been under contract with Sheffield United since 2015 .
Player career
Sheffield United (2004-2005)
After his debut for his hometown club Sheffield United in the Football League Championship 2004/05 on November 13, 2004 in the home game against Watford FC , Billy Sharp moved on January 21, 2005 on loan to fourth division club Rushden & Diamonds . By the end of the season he scored nine goals in sixteen league games.
Scunthorpe United (2005-2007)
On August 16, 2005, he signed a contract with Scunthorpe United . With his new club, Billy Sharp (37 games / 23 goals) started in the third-tier Football League One and ended the season in twelfth place in the table. Things went much better for the club in the 2006/07 season when they won the third division championship ahead of Bristol City and Blackpool FC . The club owed this title in large part to the 21-year-old attacker Billy Sharp, who scored thirty league goals and thus became the top scorer in League One.
Sheffield United (2007-2010)
Despite various other offers, Sharp decided to return to Sheffield United after the season ended. However, he could not meet the expectations placed in him and only scored his first league goal for Sheffield in March 2008. In total, he scored only four goals in the 2007/08 championship and, in ninth place, missed the play-offs with his club. Despite a disappointing season for him again in 2008/09 with four goals in twenty-two league games, United reached third place with just three points behind the direct second promotion place. After a win over Preston North End , Sheffield lost the final at Wembley against Burnley FC 1-0 and missed promotion to the Premier League .
Doncaster Rovers (2009-2012)
After he was put on the transfer list at the beginning of the season, he moved on September 1, 2009 on loan to second division rivals Doncaster Rovers . In Doncaster , Sharp (33 games / 15 goals) returned to his old strength and finished the Football League Championship 2009/10 in the middle of the table. On July 7, 2010, he signed a three-year contract with the Rovers and moved to the club for 1.15 million pounds. Due to injury, he played only twenty-nine games in the 2010/11 season , but scored fifteen goals again. On November 1, 2011, Sharp caused a national sensation in the 3-1 home game defeat by Middlesbrough FC when he scored a goal just two days after his son's death and dedicated it to his deceased son.
Southampton FC (2012-2014)
On January 30, 2012 Sharp moved to league rivals Southampton FC and signed for 3½ years. With his new team, he achieved promotion to the Premier League thanks to the runner-up in the Football League Championship 2011/12 . With nineteen league goals he was the third top scorer in the second division.
On August 31, 2012, he signed a loan deal with Nottingham Forest for the 2012/13 season .
Leeds United (2014-2015)
In the summer of 2014, he signed a two-year deal with Leeds United . In the Football League Championship 2014/15 he scored five goals for his new club.
Sheffield United (2015-)
After just a year at Leeds, Billy Sharp returned to Sheffield United in July 2015 , scoring twenty-one goals for United in his first season . In the EFL League One 2016/17 he increased his goal count to thirty goals and was thus the top scorer in the third division. Sheffield United won the league title of EFL League One and thus achieved promotion to the second division.
