Jack Christian Rodwell (born March 11, 1991 in Southport ) is an English football player who was last under contract in the Football League Championship at Blackburn Rovers . The defender holds the record as the youngest ever Everton player to appear in a European competition .
Career
Everton FC
Jack Rodwell was born in Birkdale / Southport . As a youth player, he joined Everton FC . In 2005 Rodwell made his debut as a 14-year-old for the club's U-18s. In October 2006 he was allowed to play in the reserve team for the first time. He was substituted on for David Weir in the game against Sheffield United's reserve team .
In the 2007/08 season Rodwell played in the U-18 Evertons and regularly in the reserve team trained by Andy Holden . He caught the attention of professional coach David Moyes , who replaced him in a 2007 UEFA Cup match against AZ Alkmaar , making him the youngest player in the history of Everton to be used in a European competition.
On March 9, 2008 Rodwell made his debut in the Premier League. He came on as a substitute for Tim Cahill in the 1-0 win over Sunderland . On March 17, 2008 Rodwell signed his first professional contract with Everton FC until June 30, 2014. In the last game of the 2007/08 season against Newcastle United , Rodwell made his second Premier League game when he came on for Lee Carsley in the 90th minute .
Manchester City
For the 2012/13 season he moved from the "Toffees" to league rivals Manchester City . He signed a five-year contract with the "Citizens" until June 30, 2017.
Sunderland AFC
For the 2014/15 season Rodwell moved to Sunderland AFC . He was given a five-year contract until June 30, 2019.
National team
In December 2006, Rodwell led England's U-16 side as captain through a 2-1 win over Scotland to win the Victory Shield . Four months later he scored the first winning goal for an Englishman in the new Wembley Stadium in a 1-0 win over Spain. He completed a total of five U-16 internationals for England.
On March 25, 2008 Rodwell scored the goal of England U-17 in a 1-1 draw against France in the qualifier for the U-17 European Championship.
At the U-21 European Football Championship in 2009 he was part of the English team and scored the only goal in the course of the tournament for England against eventual European champions Germany.
On November 12, 2011 Rodwell made his debut for the senior national team. England beat Spain 1-0 at London's Wembley Stadium.
