David James McGoldrick (born November 29, 1987 in Nottingham ) is a British football player who has been under contract with Sheffield United since 2018 .

Athletic career

Notts County

McGoldrick completed most of his youth training with his hometown club, Notts County . In the 2003/04 season he came to his first four appearances in the men's area. His club played at this time in the Football League Second Division , the third highest English division. In the very first season McGoldrick rose with his team in the Football League Third Division .

Southampton FC

After the end of the season, McGoldrick moved to Southampton FC and was there initially in the youth team. Southampton played in the 2004/05 Premier League , but was relegated at the end of the season. McGoldrick came only in the Football League Championship 2005/06 for his first use with the Saints. Due to a lack of match practice, he was loaned out to his youth club Notts County at short notice during the season, but there was no season goal.

Since he was mainly active in the coming season for the youth team and the reserve team of Southampton and became the top scorer there, the club's management decided to loan him out again. In February 2007 he was loaned to third division AFC Bournemouth and scored six goals in twelve games for his new club in just over two months. In late August 2007, he moved to the start of the season on loan to Port Vale , who were playing in the third division at that time. McGoldrick scored two goals in 17 games of the season through January 2008. In preparation for the 2008/09 season he managed to play his way into the first team of Southampton FC through excellent preparation. By the end of the season he scored twelve goals in 46 games, but rose with Southampton from the second division.

Nottingham Forest

After relegation McGoldrick moved in late July 2009 for a million pounds to Nottingham Forest , who had managed to stay in the 2nd division as a promoted team. On August 8, 2009 McGoldrick played his first appearance for Nottingham at Reading FC . His new team reached third place in the Football League Championship 2009/10 , but failed in the play-off semi-finals at Blackpool FC . Forest also made it into the play-offs in 2009/10 , but the early one against Swansea City followed again .

On September 15, 2011, he moved to third division Sheffield Wednesday for a month on loan .

Ipswich Town

Another loan followed on August 31, 2012. For four months, McGoldrick went to Coventry City , where he scored 16 goals in 22 games.

In January 2013 the striker was awarded again, this time to Ipswich Town . At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, the club signed him on a fixed contract basis.

National team

McGoldrick, who was adopted and grew up in England, was initially unsure whether he was eligible to play for Ireland , but research revealed blood ties both on his part and his adoptive parents to Ireland. He was first invited to the European Championship qualifier against Scotland on November 14, 2014, but only sat on the bench there. For his first international match he came four days later in Dublin in a 4-1 friendly game against the USA , where he was in the starting eleven, but was substituted after 77 minutes at 2-1 and two goal preparation. He only played his second international match in June 2015, but was substituted in the second half in the 0-0 win against England . Even if he didn't play again after that, he was appointed to the provisional 35-player squad for the European Championship on May 12, 2016 by national coach Martin O'Neill . He was then used in the two test matches before the final squad nomination, but ultimately not considered for the European Championship finals.
