The central defender , who is regularly used in both full- back positions, comes from the youth of Olympiacos Piraeus and has won two Greek championships with the men's team. He has been under contract with German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen since the 2017/18 season .

He made his debut for the Greek senior team in August 2017 . He had previously been active in the association's U-selections since 2014.

Club career

Beginnings at home

Panagiotis Retsos began his career at the age of five with Thyella Agiou Dimitriou , a club from Agios Dimitrios , a southern suburb of Athens . In 2008 he moved to Olympiacos Piraeus and went into his youth. In mid-2015 he moved up to the first team, but was only in three of 48 possible competitive games in the squad. Without commitment, he became champions in the Greek league . Only in the following season did he become an integral part of the Olympiakos squad. On August 25, 2016, he made his competitive debut in the play-off second leg of the Europa League against FC Arouca and was called up as a right -back for the entire season. He played 34 of 53 possible compulsory games and was able to celebrate the Greek championship again at the end of the season .

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

On August 31, 2017, Retsos moved to the German Bundesliga for Bayer 04 Leverkusen , where he received a contract until mid-2022. He made his debut in the team on September 17 in a 4-0 home win in the Bundesliga over SC Freiburg . He was called up over the entire season. Retsos scored the first competitive goal of his career on April 9, 2018 in the league game against RB Leipzig . In the 4-1 away win for Leverkusen, he scored the team's third goal after being substituted on for the injured Sven Bender in the middle of the first half . Overall, he played in 28 of a possible 36 games for Leverkusen and, in addition to the goal, also contributed three assists to the success of his team.

While preparing for the 2018/19 season, Retsos injured his right thigh in early August 2018. He was not back in the team for the two Europa League games against FC Zurich until the end of October . For the following game in the competition against Ludogorez Razgrad Retsos was used for the first time in the season and appointed to the starting line-up. However, he had to be substituted for Julian Baumgartlinger after 34 minutes of play , as he had previously suffered an injury to his left thigh. Another competitive game did not follow this season.

Retsos completed the preparation for the 2019/20 season without injuries and was not in the squad in only two games in the first half of the season, but he had to wait until the end of October for an appearance. In the DFB Cup match against SC Paderborn 07 , he played for Leverkusen for the first time after exactly eleven months. Five more appearances followed, including one from the start and a total of three in the Bundesliga until January 2020.

In England

On January 31, 2020, Retsos moved to Sheffield United in the Premier League for five months on a loan to England . The club had an option to sign Retsos on a permanent basis following the loan. Retsos' loan was terminated by Sheffield United on June 22nd, returning to Leverkusen. The Greek only played once in the FA Cup for the club during his time in England . Accordingly, the club did not take the option of a firm commitment of the player.

National team

Due to his birth in South Africa, Retsos would have been able to play for the South African association alongside the Greek association . However, he was never officially approached.

Retsos has played for Greece since the U-17 . With the U-17, he took part in the 2015 European Championships in Bulgaria after successfully qualifying and was eliminated in the group stage. Retsos played all three games from the start and over the entire season.

For the qualifying game for the 2018 World Cup in Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 9, 2017, Retsos was appointed to the senior national team for the first time , but was not used. He made his debut on August 31 in the 0-0 draw in the World Cup qualifying match against Estonia as a right full-back.
