Leon Patrick Bailey (born August 9, 1997 in Kingston ) is a Jamaican football player . The winger has been under contract with the German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen since the second half of the 2016/17 season .

He made his debut for Jamaica's A-selection in June 2019 .

Club career

youth

Leon Bailey began playing football on a high school team at Kingston College in the Jamaican capital. There he already stood out with his footballing skills and, when he was twelve at the time, received awards as most valuable player in the U-13, U-15 and U-17 categories at an awards ceremony by the Kingston & St. Andrew Football Association in 2010 . At the same time, he also appeared in the Phoenix All Stars Football Academy run by his adoptive father, Craig Butler . In the summer of 2011, he and three academy teammates, including his adoptive brother Kyle Butler, moved to Austria to join the then regional league team USK Anif , which was taken over by Red Bull the following year and renamed FC Liefering. There he was able to convince the U-15 team of the club with his offensive power. In 16 championship appearances he scored a total of 75 goals, which was noticed across Austria and earned him a two-week - but ultimately unsuccessful - trial training at SK Rapid Vienna .

In the summer of 2013, Bailey is said to have signed a three-year contract worth two million euros with the Belgian KRC Genk through a legal representative ; however, as he was staying illegally in the country, the contract was canceled. The move to Belgium was arranged by Bailey's stepfather, who had already served a six-year ban in his home country that had only recently expired. He had also faked a kidnapping in Mexico , where he was also active, and only returned to Belgium months later, where Bailey and two other players had sometimes stayed illegally as unaccompanied minors. After the case occurred at the Belgian Ministry of Labor , the players and their adviser fled the country.

His further career then brought Bailey to the Slovak FK AS Trenčín , where he was henceforth used exclusively in the club's own offspring.

KRC Genk

In mid-August 2015 he was finally signed by the first division club KRC Genk . He made his competitive debut on August 21, 2015, when he came onto the pitch for Siebe Schrijvers in a 1: 3 away defeat against VV St. Truiden in the 62nd minute of the game . In total, he completed 42 competitive games with Genk in his first professional season and was able to participate in 18 goals (seven goals and eleven assists ). At the end of the 2015/16 season , Bailey was named Young Professional Footballer of the Year . In May 2016, he extended his contract to summer 2019. With his team he reached fifth place in the table and came fourth in the championship round at the end of the season. In the match for participation in the second qualifying round of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League , he and his team faced Sporting Charleroi , where he was used in both the first and second leg and provided an assist in the latter. With the team he was able to win this Europa League play-off and then took part in the second qualifying round for the Europa League 2016/17.

He made his debut in European club football on July 14, 2016 in the first leg against FK Budućnost Podgorica , in which he prepared the second goal with a throw -in in his team's 2-0 victory . Then he completed a successful qualification with the KRC Genk, mainly used by his coach Peter Maes as a left winger, whereby the team qualified for the finals after a total of six qualifying games. In the qualification, in which the team did not suffer a single defeat, Bailey was successful in all six games as well as three times goalscorer and assists. In the first game of the group stage, Genk met Rapid Vienna, scoring both goals for his team in the 2: 3 away defeat at the Allianz Stadium .

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

On January 31, 2017, Bailey moved to Germany for Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen and signed a contract valid until June 30, 2022. He made his Bundesliga debut on February 3, 2017 (19th match day) in the 0-1 defeat in the away game against Hamburger SV with a substitution for Admir Mehmedi in the 82nd minute. With his hit in the 105th minute of the 3-0 win against Karlsruher SC in the first round of the DFB Cup on August 11, 2017, Bailey scored his first competitive goal for the club. He scored his first Bundesliga goal with the 1-1 final score in the away game at FC Schalke 04 on September 29, 2017 (7th matchday), after being substituted for Karim Bellarabi at the beginning of the second half . Bailey ended the 2017/18 season in fifth place with Leverkusen and played with the Werkself in the Europa League in the 2018/19 season .

In mid-August 2018, Bailey extended his contract term in Leverkusen prematurely until mid-2023.

National team

Bailey played once for the Jamaican Football Association's U23 team : In March 2015, he came on as a substitute in the second half of a game against the Cayman Islands - which Jamaica won 4-0 - and scored a goal with a free kick from around 20 meters.

Bailey has long rejected nominations for the senior national team due to personal problems with the Jamaican Football Association . In October 2018, Bailey said he wanted to play for Jamaica in the future. Shortly before a possible debut in a competitive game, he relativized the decision insofar as he expected a nomination for his brother Kyle as a condition for an appearance for the Jamaican A selection. So he needs players by his side that he can rely on.

In fact, Bailey was nominated for the national team for the June and July 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup , which Jamaica co- hosted alongside Costa Rica and the United States . He made his debut for the A-selection in the first group game against Honduras on June 17, 2019 . In the 3-2 victory of his team, he was called up in the starting lineup and used over the entire season. Jamaica failed in the semi-finals in the selection of the USA . Bailey did not play for his team only in the third group game and participated in their success with an assist.

Personal

Bailey was born in Kingston in August 1997 . A few years later, he was adopted by Craig Butler - a Jamaican businessman who founded the Phoenix All Stars Football Academy in his homeland . Bailey is the father of a son born in June 2020. His step-brother, Kyle Butler , played with Bailey at least from 2011 to 2013 and from 2016 to 2017 in the same clubs, although both never played a professional game together. Today his stepbrother plays for SC Austria Lustenau in Austria .

On April 2, 2017, Bailey got into a verbal argument with the Belgian boxer Atif Tanriseven Ribera in a café in Genk . Bailey had previously filmed Tanriseven shadow boxing in a gym, posted the video on Snapchat and called him a "clown". Tanriseven, for his part, threatened Bailey with violence if he repeated. Bayer 04 Leverkusen criticized Bailey's behavior.
