The Allianz Stadium , often called the West Stadium in UEFA competitions and in parlance , is a football stadium in Hütteldorf , part of the 14th district of Penzing in the Austrian capital Vienna . It was built on the site of the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium as the new home of SK Rapid Wien . Construction of the venue began on December 1, 2014. The stadium was officially opened on July 16, 2016 and has been in use since the 2016/17 season .

history

The Allianz Stadium has space for 24,288 spectators, including 2,470 business seats and 41 boxes for VIP guests as well as 50 seats for wheelchair users plus an escort. For national games, the stadium can be expanded to accommodate 28,345 spectators with standing room. The concept development from the structural study to the preparation of the tender documents was carried out by SK Rapid Wien in cooperation with the Institute for Sports Facility Consulting (IFS GmbH) and Peter Fleissner. The new home of SK Rapid bears the name of insurance company Allianz Austria . The cooperation officially began on July 1, 2014 and will initially run until the end of the 2025/26 season. The most striking element of the new building is the tubular main building behind the main grandstand. The UEFA stadium category 4 stadium is designed in Rapids' club colors green and white.

The design for the project “Old Home - New Home” came from the architecture office ARC - Architektur Concept. On July 6, 2014 there was a farewell game for the Hanappi Stadium , the game against Celtic Glasgow ended 1: 1. Rapid then played its games until the new stadium in the Ernst Happel Stadium was completed .

The total costs for the new building carried out by the general contractor STRABAG were estimated at 53 million euros, of which almost 20 million euros came from the City of Vienna. The remaining amount was partly raised by the Allianz Group and partly financed by SK Rapid via long-term loan financing.

The stadium was rotated by 90 ° compared to the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium , and the forecourt of the new venue was renamed in honor of the former Rapid player and later architect Gerhard Hanappi . As a result, the new club address of Rapid Vienna is Gerhard-Hanappi-Platz 1 .

As a reminder of the old and popular stadium was one of the four floodlight towers of the Hanappi stadium are, but which no longer functions as a light source because the new LED - floodlight was integrated into the stadium roof.

At the beginning of November 2014, the stadium project cleared the last regulatory hurdle. The construction committee of the Penzing district voted on November 5th in favor of the stadium construction. On November 25, 2014, the legally binding building permit was issued, so the construction of the new home of the SK Rapid could begin. With the exception of a small part of the south stand, with a transformer station that is important for the construction work , the demolition of the Hanappi was 99 percent completed in January 2015.

After a winter break, the foundation work started in mid-January 2015 . At that time, SK Rapid announced the official date for the groundbreaking ceremony on February 12, 2015. At the beginning of February, the last remaining part of the south stand was demolished.

Opening of the new Rapideum on July 14, 2016

The Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer , Vice Mayor Renate Brauner ( SPÖ ) and City Councilor for Sports Christian Oxonitsch (SPÖ) held the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony on February 12th in the presence of around 200 invited guests, including the SK Rapid team and presidium marked the official start of construction.

Most of the grandstands were completed in the summer of 2015 and then the construction of the roof began.

At the beginning of July 2016, the construction company STRABAG handed over the stadium to SK Rapid after a construction period of 17 months.

The club offered its members the opportunity to visit the stadium for the first time before the official opening on July 9, 2016. Around 6,500 members accepted the invitation. As part of the event, former SK Rapid players played a “legends duel” against a team made up of former players from First Vienna FC 1894 and the Vienna Sports Club . The game ended 8-2. Andreas Herzog scored the first goal in the Allianz Stadium .

On July 13, 2016, the new fan shop was opened, which is located next to the "tube" with the Rapid logo. The next day, Gerhard-Hanappi-Platz was named and the new Rapideum , the Rapid Museum, opened, which is located inside the tube and shows the club's history using around 1,000 objects.

The opening game was played on July 16, 2016 by SK Rapid Wien and the English club FC Chelsea . The hosts beat Chelsea 2-0 in front of 28,000 fans. In the first competitive game on July 23, SK Rapid received SV Ried on the 1st matchday of the Austrian Football Championship 2016/17 . The game ended with a 5-0 home win for the Austrian record champions. Christoph Schößwendter scored the first competitive goal in the Allianz Stadium.

SK Rapid suffered their first competitive defeat in the new stadium on August 25, 2016 in the play-off second leg of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League against AS Trenčín . Rapid lost the game 2-0 in front of 21,200 spectators, but SK Rapid won the first leg 4-0 and made it into the group stage.

In the summer of 2018, more than 7,200 square meters of lawn had to be replaced due to fungus infestation and some of the soil had to be removed, the costs amounted to around 100,000 euros.

On June 7th, 2020, Rapid beat SK Sturm Graz 4-0 in front of empty spectators. The duel with the Grazers was the first Bundesliga home game of the Hütteldorfer, which was played as a ghost game in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic .
