The Bundesliga is the top division in Austrian football. This will be held for the 47th time in the 2020/21 season and will determine the 109th Austrian football champion. As in previous years, the sports betting provider Tipico is the main sponsor , which is why the official league name is Tipico-Bundesliga .

Lower Austria, Vienna, Upper Austria and Styria each provide two clubs, Tyrol, Carinthia, Salzburg and Vorarlberg one each. Burgenland does not provide a team in the 2020/21 season.

The TV provider Sky Deutschland GmbH has the rights to show all Bundesliga games in full length that are broadcast on the sky sport austria channel on pay TV . The transmitter shows all games in conference call and as single games. In addition, four games and a highlight program will be broadcast on free TV.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated almost three-month break from game operations between March and June 2020, the Bundesliga season will not end until mid-July 2020, in the 2nd division on July 31, 2020. As a result, the start of the season was postponed to 11 September 2020.

mode

In the 2020/21 season, twelve clubs will compete against each other in 22 rounds for the third time after the 2018/19 season. Each team thus plays once at home and away against every other team. Then the best six teams go into the champions group and the remaining six into the qualification group. The points from the basic round are halved. Half points are rounded down. If two clubs are tied at the end of the final round and half a point has been rounded off at one of these clubs, this club is ranked first. If none or both clubs rounded down, the goal difference is used as the next decision criterion. If this is also the same, the other four existing decision criteria are used.

This is followed by a Europa League playoff for places 4 and 5 in the champions group and for the winner of the qualifying group, in which the last European Cup starting place is played out.

The last placed in the top division must be relegated to the 2nd division.

Yellow cards and bans from yellow, yellow-red and red cards are taken from the basic round to the finals. Between the final round and the play-off games, only bans for yellow-red or red cards remain in place. The bans due to yellow cards or the number of yellow cards will be deleted after the final round, i.e. no yellow bans are possible in the play-off games. This is to ensure that the clubs can compete in the play-off games with the best possible teams.

Third performance level - regional league

    mode

The regional leagues east and middle form the third level in Austrian football. The Regionalliga Ost is formed by the clubs of the Vienna , Lower Austria and Burgenland Football Associations . The Regionalliga Mitte is made up of clubs from the Upper Austrian , Carinthian and Styrian football associations . After the 2018/19 season, the Regionalliga West was abolished; from the 2019/20 season onwards, the two best clubs in the Salzburg , Tyrol and Vorarlberg football associations each form an elite league in spring and play for promotion to the second division.

After the withdrawal of the ASK Ebreichsdorf after the 2019/20 season, the starting place of the Lower Austrians was not filled. Due to the suspension of the SV Mattersburg game operations , the amateurs can no longer compete in the Regionalliga Ost and after the withdrawal of the professional team there is an increase in the 2nd division. The Rapid Amateurs got the free place. The remaining clubs are committed to increasing the RLO.
