The SK Sturm Graz II is the second team of the Austrian Bundesliga SK Sturm Graz . The team has been playing in the Regionalliga Mitte , the third highest division, without interruption since the 2002/03 season .
history
The Sturm Amateuren achieved promotion to the third-class regional league center for the first time in 1998 in a syndicate with the former second division club LUV Graz . In this, however, LUV / Sturm Amateure only stayed for one season, in 1999 they were relegated to the state league again as the penultimate . After the 2000/01 season, the syndicate was ended and the Sturm Amateurs took the place of LUV in the national league. In the first season, the Sturm Amateuren managed to return to the regional league in 2002 , with a 13-point lead over runner-up FC Großklein .
In the 2002/03 season, the climber reached tenth place in the table. In the 2003/04 season they improved to eighth place. In the 2004/05 season, the Sturm Amateurs reached sixth place in the table. In the 2005/06 season, the Sturm Amateurs also took part in the ÖFB Cup after defeating ASK Voitsberg in the preliminary round . In the first round of the cup, they defeated the Red Bull Juniors , the amateurs of FC Red Bull Salzburg . In the second round they finally failed at the Bundesliga club FC Wacker Tirol . In the league they finished eleventh in that season. After taking ninth place in the 2006/07 season, the Grazers achieved their best table placement in the 2007/08 season with fifth place. This could be topped again in the 2008/09 season, the Sturm Amateurs took third place in the table. The champions and thus second division promoted TSV Hartberg were still eight points missing. The best season was promptly followed by the worst season: In the 2009/10 season they finished 13th in the table, the first non-relegation place in the table. Nevertheless, Graz had an eight point lead over 14th SVL Flavia Solva . In that season they also took part in the cup again after they had prevailed in qualifying against SC Kalsdorf . In the first round they defeated the Bundesliga club Kapfenberger SV and in the second round they were eliminated from the Bundesliga club SV Ried .
Relegation was tighter in the 2010/11 season: Although they finished twelfth, they were only seven points ahead of SV Feldkirchen . However, the Graz team qualified again for the cup after a preliminary round victory against SC Weiz , but they were eliminated against the eventual winner Ried in the first round. In the 2011/12 season they reached ninth place in the Regionalliga Mitte, but Graz only had a five-point lead on the relegation ranks. After the Graz team had prevailed against SV Frohnleiten in the preliminary round , they also took part in the cup for the third time in a row in the 2011/12 season. However, they failed again in the first round, this time in extra time at the second division LASK .
In the 2012/13 season, Sturm II finished twelfth. With eighth place in the 2013/14 season, the Styrians achieved a single-digit place in the table. In the 2014/15 season, the team improved to seventh place in the table. In 2015/16, Sturm II was in eleventh place, in 2016/17 in tenth place. After they had a terrific start to the season in the 2017/18 season and were even first in the table up to the twelfth match day, the Graz team successfully applied for admission to the 2nd division . In the end, however, they only finished ninth , the Grazers were six points short of the worst of the four promoted players, SK Austria Klagenfurt . In the 2018/19 season, Sturm II received another second division approval, but as seventh and 21 points behind the master Grazer AK , they had nothing to do with the promotion. In the 2019/20 season they finished first after 17 match days before the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
