The FC Wels is a football club from the Upper Austrian city of Wels and plays of the season 2018/19 in the third highest performance level, the Regional center .

history

FC Wels was founded during the current championship in 2003 through the merger of the traditional clubs SK Eintracht and FC Union . Long before that, there had always been discussions about a big club in Wels, since in addition to these clubs there are also the WSC Hertha , ESV Wels and the Blaue Elf Wels. Nothing came of a single big club, however, which made the, especially from a political point of view, explosive fusion between the “red” unity and the “black” union all the more surprising.

The first championship in 2002/03 was finished in 12th place in the table, in 2003/04 FC Wels occupied 15th and penultimate place. In 2004/05 Wels came in 13th and in 2005/06 in eighth place.

In the 2006/07 game year, Wels played a decent, but not outstanding, autumn, wintering in 5th place. Due to the large deficit on the top, the Welser did not seek a license for the first division . That was almost to take revenge: In the second half of the season they won one game after the other, leading the table until the penultimate matchday. The championship title was lost due to a defeat on the last day of the match, but the runner-up is still the greatest success in the club's young history. From the 2012/13 season, however, the club played fourth class after being just relegated the previous year.

In the 2014/15 season the final of the Baunti-Landescup was won 3-1 against ATSV Stadl-Paura , which meant the first big title for FC Wels.

In the 2017/18 season they were able to move up to the regional league again in fourth place.

Stadion

Since the 2016/17 season, FC Wels has been playing in the "HUBER Arena" in Wimpassing, which was newly built from July 2014 to July 2016. This offers space for up to 3,000 visitors, including up to 500 spectators in a covered seat on the grandstand. The stadium consists of a main field as well as 2 training fields and a small and large artificial turf pitch.

Since July 6, 2017, the stadium has been renamed "Sportanlage Wimpassing" again.

Before that, FC Wels played on the grounds of the former Eintracht Wels, the "ASKÖ Stadium" in the Vogelweide district and in the "Union Stadium" of the former FC Union in Wels-Lichtenegg .
