Vogelweide is a district in the northwest of the Upper Austrian city of Wels . With more than 16,000 inhabitants, it is the largest district in terms of population in Wels .
The district emerged in the first half of the 20th century from the cadastral communities Lichtenegg and Obereisenfeld. Today the Vogelweide is predominantly a residential district.
Districts and settlements
The Vogelweide district is divided into the districts and settlements: Gartenstadt, Gaßl, Laahen, Niederthan, Obereisenfeld, Oberthan, Wimpassing and Wispl. In the north the Vogelweide borders on the municipality of Krenglbach , in the east on the districts of Puchberg and Neustadt , in the south on the inner city and Lichtenegg and in the west on the municipality of Gunskirchen .
history
Until the middle of the first half of the 20th century, today's Vogelweide district consisted mainly of agricultural land. At the beginning of the 20th century, the United Fatty Industry settled in the Vogelweide. Only at the end of the 1920s did the construction of apartment buildings begin on the Posthof grounds. On May 15, 1930, the then mayor of Wels, Dr. Aubert Salzmann that the square in the middle of the houses is named after Walter von der Vogelweide . The aim was to reinforce the historical connection to the Lower Franconian city of Würzburg . This had celebrated the 700th anniversary of the minstrel's death a few weeks before the naming. After just a few years, the name Vogelweide caught on for the entire settlement .
With the annexation of Austria to the Third Reich, the Wels homestead was placed under the Reich Service Office and centralized. Since a lot of people were employed in the Wels aircraft factory, living space was urgently needed. This meant that further apartments could be built until 1942.
The bird pasture was badly damaged by bombing raids on Wels, and some houses were uninhabitable for many years. The reconstruction of the damaged building began immediately after the war.
With the influx of the rural population from the surrounding area, new apartments were urgently needed. Thus, the bird pasture grew like no other district in Wels in the 1950s. In 1952 the foundation stone for the Church of the Holy Family was laid. Together with Heimstättenring and Vogelweiderplatz, it forms the center of the Vogelweide. Under Mayor Leopold Spitzer , the garden city with the high-rise housing estates typical of it was built and several residential buildings were also built in Laahen. The expansion of the residential area in the Vogelweide continues to the present; at the beginning of this century the Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis was inaugurated in the Laahen district.
Economy and Infrastructure
The largest companies located in the Vogelweide counting district are the Vereinigte Fettwaren Industrie and the rope manufacturer Teufelberger . Due to the historical connection, the Welser Heimstättengenossenschaft also has its headquarters in the Vogelweide. In the coming years, an industrial and economic area is to be created in the Oberthan district. A separate motorway exit in Wimpassing is also being planned. The Vogelweide is connected with the lines 2, 3 and 4 with the city center, the train station and the other census districts and districts. In addition, Vogelweide has its own fire station with the Wimpassing outdoor station , which is integrated into the voluntary fire brigade of the city of Wels.
Culture and leisure
Vogelweide is the hometown of the Wels football club FC Wels . The training center is the ASKÖ stadium in Sauerbruchstrasse. A new stadium is to be built in Wimpassing in the coming years. The Wimpassing leisure facility is a local recreation area for the people of Wels. It is located in the floodplain of the Grünbach. On the 130,000 m² area there is a large children's playground as well as a fish pond.
The Vogelweide Theater is of particular cultural importance and mainly stages classics from German and Austrian stage literature.
