Neustadt (in Wels the Neustadt ) is a district of the city of Wels . It was created at the end of the 19th century from parts of the Wels cadastral community and parts of the Puchberg bei Wels community, which was independent until 1938. With 13,235 inhabitants, the Neustadt is the third largest district of Wels.

Entrance gate to the Wels cemetery

In the Neustadt there are some very important facilities for Wels, such as the cemetery, the Wels-Grieskirchen Clinic and the Hessenkaserne. The Wels airfield actually belongs to the Pernau cadastral community, but is administratively counted as part of the Neustadt.

Districts and settlements

The Neustadt is divided into the historical districts: Oberhaid, Unterhaid and Höllwiesen. There are other settlement names such as Mauth, Straubinger and Eisenbahnersiedlung, but these are not recognized districts.

The Neustadt borders in the south on the districts of Innere Stadt and Pernau , in the west on the district Vogelweide and in the north and east on the district Puchberg .

history

At the end of the 19th century, the construction of houses began in the north of the city of Wels; the first buildings are documented in the mid-1880s. In 1886 the cemetery of the city of Wels was moved to its current location in the Neustadt. In 1905 the foundation stone was laid for the Herz-Jesu-Kirche , which is now looked after by the Steyler missionaries .

The most important traffic route into the city center was the Kaiser-Karl-Brücke, opened in 1916, which connected the Neustadt to the city center via the western railway tracks. Today there is the Neustadt underpass built in the 1950s.

The history of the Neustadt is inextricably linked with that of the Welser Heimstätten cooperative. In 1911, the non-profit association acquired a plot of land in the Oberhaid district (then the municipality of Puchberg) and built the first social housing in the city there.

During the Second World War , the new town was badly damaged by bombing, especially in the southern parts. The main goals were the main train station and an air force hospital in the area of today's clinic. This complex, consisting of twelve barracks, was almost completely destroyed in the first Allied air raid on the city of Wels on May 30, 1944. In addition, there were other military camps in the Neustadt and in the north of Wels, which were associated with the billeting of Luftwaffe soldiers or the expansion of the Wels air base and became - as in other Wels districts - numerous residential buildings for military use Personnel ("flying houses") built, some of which still exist today.

In the second half of the 20th century, the new town was steadily expanded and developed into an attractive residential area.

Economy and Infrastructure

Entrance area of the Wels-Grieskirchen Clinic

Above all, the Wels-Grieskirchen Clinic is of supraregional importance ; it is one of the largest religious hospitals in Europe. The Neustadt is also outstanding with its civil airfield , which is the largest of its kind in Europe with 105 hectares. The Neustadt is also home to numerous educational institutions; In Anton-Bruckner-Straße there is an upper-level high school, in Wallerer Straße with the federal high school in Wels Wallererstraße there is a high school with a focus on sport. Due to the proximity to the clinic, there are also some schools with the branches social and health. A large employer is the Hessenkaserne, which has an army logistics center with its own tank workshop. The location is important for the Austrian Armed Forces as there is a direct rail connection via the marshalling yard. Another important employer is the agricultural machinery manufacturer Reformwerke AG, which has been producing at the Neustadt location since 1910. The furniture group XXXLutz is also based in Wels-Neustadt. In the north of the district - along the A25 motorway - there are numerous shopping opportunities, especially DIY and garden centers are located here. The Bauhaus hardware store chain is also based in this district.

Due to the increasing volume of traffic in the past decades, the Neustadt is now well developed in terms of traffic. The B137 (Welser Osttangente) runs through the district to the east. There is a motorway connection via the Wels-Nord motorway exit. As the district boundaries in Wels lie along the railway lines Westbahn , Passauer Bahn and Almtalbahn , Neustadt has a direct connection to the main train station . In the coming years, a multi-storey car park is to be built on the Neustadt side of the train station, this should relieve the existing parking facilities in the Neustadt. The district is connected to the city center via bus lines 1 and 4 and from there to the rest of the city.
