Wels marshalling yard (Wels Vbf) is a marshalling yard and transshipment station operated by ÖBB Infrastruktur in the Upper Austrian city of Wels .

location

The Wels marshalling yard is located east of the main train station and north of the Westbahn . Not far from the train station is the junction with the Passau Railway, which is important for freight traffic, to Germany.

history

The marshalling yard was built in the Pernau district by the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1938/39 to transport armaments from here . Only the part north of the Westbahn was completed and should be used for west-east traffic. An equally large part south of the Western Railway was started, but not completed due to the war . The station was damaged in the Second World War and only reopened in 1949.

Marshalling yard

The marshalling yard is laid out on one side with twelve tracks in the approach group and 24 direction tracks. A total of ten connecting lines are connected to the station.

Rolling country road

A rolling road to Mainz has been set up in Wels Vbf since 1985 . Today the station has five tracks with a length of 350 to 450 m for the Rollende Landstrasse and 250 truck parking spaces. This makes it the largest RoLa terminal in Europe. A total of 116,000 trucks were dispatched here in 2006.

Combined traffic

In June 1986 the first unaccompanied combined transport was set up. A first gantry crane was set up in 1989 with three loading tracks with a usable length of 400 m. The terminal was rebuilt between 1997 and 2002. Today, six tracks with a usable length of 580 m are available for unaccompanied combined traffic. These have two gantry cranes and three reach stackers . There is also a storage area for 900 TEU . 130,000 cargo units are handled annually . The terminal has had a hub function in the National Intermodal Network Austria (NINA) of Rail Cargo Austria since April 2011 . The remaining Austrian terminals in Vienna Northwest, Salzburg , Villach, St. Michael, Graz, Hall, Wolfurt, Bludenz, Linz, Krems and Kapfenberg are served from here.
