The Union Vöcklamarkt is a sports club from Vöcklamarkt in Upper Austria . The football section of the Union is the oldest and also the most successful alongside fistball , stick shooting , model flying , table tennis , winter sports and gymnastics .

history

founding

Long before the Union was founded, there were various sports clubs in Vöcklamarkt. A sports club appeared for the first time as early as 1900. After the First World War , the "German Völkisch Gymnastics Club" and the "Christian-German Gymnastics Club" were founded. However, the Second World War with all its turmoil ended the activities of these associations.

Shortly after the end of the war, Vöcklamarkt started thinking about founding a sports club. For the time being, two independent groups were formed. One group led by Hubert Rabe, Sepp Meinhart and Gustl Sporrer got together regularly for football matches, the other group around Herbert Breinl and Josef Gruber was primarily interested in a non-partisan sports club. Since both groups ultimately pursued the same interests, Union Vöcklamarkt was founded on September 24, 1946 , which placed itself under the Sportunion umbrella organization.

When the union was founded, it had a total of 43 members. In the 1950s, however, the membership already exceeded the 100-member mark.

Decades in the Football House of Commons (1949–1976)

After the founding of the union, three years should pass before the union Vöcklamarkt could participate in the regular championship operation in the lowest division for the first time. One of the reasons for this was that there was initially no sports field in Vöcklamarkt and the Union could only compete away from home. Under the direction of section head Sepp Meinhart, the old swimming pool was filled in in 1948 and a soccer field was built on it.

The new sports field paved the way for a regular championship operation, in which the Union first took part in 1949. With the third place the first season in the 2nd class (lowest division) ended behind the FC Mattighofen and the ATSV Schneegattern. The footballers from Vöcklamarkt stayed in the 2nd class until 1955, before they had to accept the descent into the 3rd class, which had been newly introduced years earlier. The time in the lowest division ended in 1960 with promotion to the 2nd class. Only two years later, the promotion to 1st class could be fixed.

With the first promotion to the district league in 1964, the kickers from Vöcklamarkt reached a temporary high point. After only two years, Vöcklamarkt had to say goodbye to the district league again. The second attempt in the district league in 1973 turned out to be more successful than the first, because the footballers from Vöcklamarkt were only supposed to stay in the district league for three years.

Golden era of football and Bundesliga (1977–1987)

1976 succeeded in promotion to the 2nd national league, in which the successful team should only stay for one year. Already in the first year the Union Vöcklamarkt created a sensation with captain Franz Starzinger and trainer Walter Schneeberger and marched through to the 1st regional league, which at that time was the third highest division in Austria after the 1st division and the 2nd division . The opponents at that time were SK Vorwärts Steyr , FC Union Wels or SV Ried . Nine successful years in the 1st regional league should follow. The keen interest of the spectators made it necessary to improve the football facilities. A covered grandstand was built that can hold 500 spectators.

With a lot of fighting spirit, ambition and luck, the national championship title was brought to Vöcklamarkt for the first time in 1981 under coach Ernst Knorrek . Opponents like SK Vorwärts Steyr or SV Ried were relegated to the following places. This allowed the Union to take part in the relegation games for promotion to the 2nd division for the first time. However , Vöcklamarkt failed in one home and one away game against SVL Flavia Solva and SV Spittal / Drau .

A highlight in the club's history was the entry into the quarter-finals of the ÖFB Cup 1983/84: On March 13, 1984, the reigning champions SK Rapid Wien had to fight against Union Vöcklamarkt for promotion to the semi-finals under coach Otto Barić . Well-known players such as Hans Krankl (captain), Zlatko Kranjčar and Heribert Weber were to be found in the SK Rapid squad . In the Waldstadion, 3,000 spectators - more were not allowed for security reasons - watched the game, in which the Union sold well. It was only with goals from Gerald Willfurth (64th minute) and Zlatko Kranjčar (85th minute) that Rapid secured a place in the semi-finals and subsequently the cup victory.

Subsequently, the team from Vöcklamarkt did not draw attention to itself in the cup. However, the union succeeded in 1985 the runner-up title and 1986 the renewed title win in the Upper Austrian regional league. In the relegation games against SV Feldkirchen and FC Zeltweg , Union Vöcklamarkt secured an unexpected promotion to the 2nd division (second highest league) in the last game with an away win in Feldkirchen; a success that no club in the Vöcklabruck district had ever achieved before .

The first game year 1986/87 in the 2nd division brought numerous prominent teams to Vöcklamarkt. SV Austria Salzburg , VfB Mödling , DSV Leoben , SK Vorwärts Steyr , Kremser SC , SW Bregenz or SVL Flavia Solva ensured great interest from the audience in Vöcklamarkt, which resulted in the construction of a second covered grandstand and a floodlight system. In the third round with 3,000 spectators, the Salzburg team ensured a hopelessly sold-out house. With a clear 0: 3 victory, Salzburg underlined their title ambitions and inflicted their first defeat of the season on Vöcklamarkt. Ultimately, Union Vöcklamarkt had little to offer in the 2nd division despite several acquisitions from experienced players and, as the penultimate, rose again in the first year together with SW Bregenz and SV St. Veit .

Years in the regional league (1988-2010)

The brief guest appearance in the 2nd division was followed by five years in the first Upper Austrian regional league with moderate success. In 1992, relegation to the 2nd regional league had to be accepted. But as early as 1995 the Union Vöcklamarkt secured promotion back to the 1st regional league. There you could re-establish yourself as a fixed size and were mostly to be found in the upper third of the table. This enabled the green-yellow footballers to regularly secure a qualification place in the ÖFB Cup .

The 2000/01 season offered Union Vöcklamarkt (fifth place) an opportunity to move up when the then master LASK Amateure was not eligible for promotion to the Middle Regional League . After Union Vöcklamarkt (as well as other clubs) refrained from promotion for economic reasons, the promotion place was passed on to the table seventh, SC Schwanenstadt (played in the second highest division from 2006 until the license sale in 2008). This attitude of the association - not wanting to rise - was revised a year later, but the chance to do so did not arise, they landed on 2nd place and became runner-up behind the Union Perg.

In contrast, you could show several times in the ÖFB Cup. In autumn 2006 the Union Vöcklamarkt reached the 2nd round and had to admit defeat to the second division club FC Kärnten . Another highlight was the cup game against the regional division FC Blau-Weiß Linz on August 9, 2005. In front of 1,500 spectators, the game went into overtime with a score of 1: 1. The Linz team were able to make it 1: 3 with goals in the 96th and 111th minutes, before Vöcklamarkt created the sensation and equalized 3: 3 in the 124th minute. The Vöcklamarkter then decided the penalty shootout 5-4 for themselves. In the first main round, however, came after a clear 2: 5 away defeat at SK St. Andrä the end.

Regionalliga Mitte (2010-2015)

After years of moderate sporting success and many trainer changes, Karl Vietz was hired as a trainer during the summer break of 2008. With the former goalkeeper, the successes returned. In 2009, for the first time in years, they were able to play at the top of the table and celebrate the runner-up title behind the professional team of FC Pasching . The big coup followed a year later, however, when on June 6, 2010 in front of 2,200 spectators against Vorwärts Steyr with a narrow 1-0 home win in the penultimate round, the championship and the associated promotion to the Middle Regional League could be fixed. In the same year they were also rewarded with a Bundesliga team in the ÖFB Cup, FC Wacker Innsbruck eliminated Vöcklamarkt with a clear 3-0 in front of over 2,000 spectators.

With a team strengthened only selectively, the first regional league year after a false start could finally be finished in 9th place without relegation pressure, a year later they sensationally won 4th place, which also made them the best Upper Austrian team in the league and with it the successful coaching era Vietz / Gilhofer came to an end. In the third year, however, you played almost the whole season against relegation, even if you should never stand on such a place. The highlight of this season was a thrilling 1-0 victory over the eventual cup winners FC Pasching, which thereby gambled away the championship title, contributed significantly to staying up in the league for Vöcklamarkt and thus participating in a top-class regional league season with well-known teams Blau-Weiß Linz, LASK and Forward Steyr secured.

Relegation to the Upper Austria League and promotion (since 2015)

In the 2014/2015 season you finally had to come to terms with the penultimate place in the table, which meant relegation to the Upper Austria League. The immediate promotion was of course the goal for the following season. There they only just missed (3 points behind) the championship title, which went to SV Grieskirchen . In the 2016/2017 season, Vöcklamarkt confidently secured the championship title under coach Jürgen Schatas - with a 19-point lead - and after two years of the Upper Austrian League rose again to the Middle Regional League and also qualified for the ÖFB Cup. There they were promoted to the second round for the first time in 11 years with the impressive 7-0 home win over SV Wörgl , where they will meet FK Austria Wien .

Fan clubs

The large number of visitors to Union Vöcklamarkt has been remarkable for decades. The Vöcklamarkt Trailer Club (ACV) with 250 members has existed since 1986 . The ACV organizes the indoor tournament as well as the Whitsun tournament, enables sports betting for the combat team and is responsible for selling fan articles. All proceeds go to the Union's youth development. The “Westtribüne” fan club with 30 members has been active for a long time, but was only officially founded in 2007.

Stadion

Home of the club is the "Black Crevice Stadium", also known colloquially as the "Waldstadion". It holds 2,700 spectators (including 900 seats). In 1949, a soccer field was built at the location of today's stadium, which met the requirements of the time for a championship operation. With growing success, the stadium was expanded accordingly. A grandstand with seating was built in 1977 and in 1986 (after the fixed promotion to the 2nd division) a floodlight system and another grandstand were built in the west. The construction of a clubhouse (2007) and the laying of modern artificial turf (2009) were the last improvements to the stadium infrastructure so far.

Since August 1976 the Volksbank has been the main sponsor of the football section of the Sportunion, which is why the club's full name is “Union Volksbank Vöcklamarkt” (short: UVB Vöcklamarkt). The traditional four-leaf clover on the jerseys was therefore temporarily replaced by a sponsor logo. Due to the long-term cooperation with the sponsor, the name "UVB Vöcklamarkt" can be found again and again in the media.
