The games for the Austrian football championship 1997/98 were for the first time sponsored by the Austrian mobile operator max.mobil and under the responsibility of the Austrian Bundesliga, which was constituted as a separate club . The top division was named "max. Bundesliga" for the first time this season. The promoted to the first Bundesliga was played for the last time in the 2nd division of the Austrian Bundesliga , which was reformed after the end of the season and renamed the first division . The third division consisted of the three regional leagues West, Middle and East.
First performance level - Bundesliga
mode
The max.-Bundesliga was contested with 10 teams, each of which met four times during the entire season. The championship title was won for the first time in the history of the SK Sturm Graz club . The Graz team dominated the championship with their trio Ivica Vastić, Hannes Reinmayr and Mario Haas, known as the "magic triangle", and won the championship with a new record advantage of 19 points over pursuers and runner-up Rapid.
useful information
For the 1998/99 game year , the name of the previous 2nd division of the Austrian Bundesliga was renamed to 1st Division (also: First Division) based on the English model. At the same time, there was a major reform and a reduction in the second division from 16 to ten clubs. The aim of this measure was to put the foundation of the Bundesliga on a healthy financial basis. Those second division clubs that had to relegate to the regional leagues due to this reduction in the transition year 1997/98 received a one-off severance payment of ATS 1.5 million . The clubs from Altach, Hartberg, Wattens and Kufstein benefited from this settlement.
VSE St. Pölten and SV Gerasdorf merged under pressure from the Lower Austrian governor Erwin Pröll after the end of the season to form FC Niederösterreich St. Pölten.
As Austrian champions, Sturm was eligible to qualify for the UEFA Champions League in the following year. Vice champions Rapid and the third-placed GAK were allowed to compete in the qualification for the UEFA Cup . Last year's champion from Salzburg had to be satisfied with fourth place this time and qualified with this rank, next to LASK Linz, only for the UI Cup . SV Ried achieved participation in one of the three major European competitions for the first time with the ÖFB Cup victory and represented Austria in the European Cup Winners' Cup in the next game year .

Climbers
The Bundesliga climber from Steyr , who took up the sponsorship name SK Komm und Kauf Österreich , which was exposed to the official and media malice until the winter break, only received the license for the top division in the third instance and with the deduction of three points for the 1998/99 season. Vice-champion Spittal , who would have moved up to the Bundesliga as a possible climber, and relegated Altach , who could have remained in the second division due to a license refusal for Steyr, filed a civil court action against the positive decision for the Upper Austrian. After the court agreed with the plaintiffs, SV Spittal was accepted by the Bundesliga as the eleventh club for the following season. After all ten competitors of the Bundesliga spoke out against this increase to eleven clubs, the Bundesliga put the Carinthians back into the second division before the championship began. SV Spittal and the Bundesliga subsequently agreed on financial compensation, so that further legal steps on the part of the Carinthian association were omitted.
Second performance level - Second division of the Bundesliga
The second division was the second highest Austrian division after the max. Bundesliga. It was played with 15 clubs that met twice during the season. The odd number of participating clubs came about due to the merger of the two first division clubs in Linz and the SCN Admira / Wacker with the second division club VfB Mödling.
