Günther Neukirchner (born December 2, 1971 in Grambach ) is a former Austrian football player on the position of a defender . He spent most of his active career at the traditional Styrian club SK Sturm Graz , with whom he celebrated great success.
Career
As a player
The all-rounder was a key player in SK Sturm Graz . The Styrian has been playing in Graz since 1980 . "Gü", as he is called by his teammates, first played in the youth team, with the amateurs and later in the combat team . He became an all-rounder, because as a young storm kicker he was not used in his position as a striker and therefore repeatedly switched to other positions. He has played in every position in the Bundesliga so far, with the exception of the goalkeeper.
Neukirchner made his debut in the Austrian national team on August 19, 1998 against France in a 2-2 draw in Vienna . He made a total of 14 internationals. His career in the national team came to an inglorious end when he and eight teammates refused to fly to Israel to take part in the last qualifying game for the 2002 World Cup ( see also the international soccer match Israel - Austria 2001 ).
With Sturm Graz he was twice Austrian champion and three times Austrian cup winner . He also played three times in the Champions League .
On August 30, 2006 it was announced on the club's website that Neukirchner ended his active career. On August 31, the Graz veteran signed a contract with FC Gratkorn in the second-class first division . In the summer of 2007 he ended his active football career there after 16 appearances and one goal. With 426 games, Günther Neukirchner played the second most games for SK Sturm Graz.
As a trainer
For the 2009/10 season, the Graz native moved back to his home club, this time to fill the post of assistant coach of the amateur team . In September 2014 Neukirchner acted as an interim coach for the pros for two games. In November 2018 he became interim coach for a second time.
