The Austrian Football Championship 1960/61 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. The regional leagues East (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), Middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and West (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the State League A. The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.

First level - State League A

General

In the championship season 1960/61, Vienna Austria won its sixth title as Austrian football champion just in time for the club's 50th anniversary. For a long time the club had a comfortable lead. Already in the 22nd round the Veilchen were confirmed as the new champions after a 5: 1 over Wiener Neustadt, but in the last meaningless rounds there was a surprising defeat against relegated Wacker and a 1: 5 against LASK. Austria started as champions for the first time in the 1962 European Cup , Cup winner Rapid was allowed to take part in the 1962 European Cup . Both teams made it to the round of 16, where Benfica for Austria and Fiorentina for Rapid turned out to be too difficult a task.
