Aflac Incorporated ( American Family Life Assurance Company ) is a US insurance company based in Columbus , Georgia . Aflac is listed on the S&P 500 and has a market value of $ 24 billion. The company provides health and life insurance in particular, and has more than 40 million customers in the United States and Japan, with the latter accounting for 75% of sales. Despite the natural disaster in Japan in 2011 , its consequences and the financial market crisis, the insurer increased its shareholders' dividend for the 30th year in a row.

The company was founded in Columbus, Georgia in 1955 by three brothers, John, Paul and Bill Amos. Initially, the name of the company was American Family Life Assurance Company . The company has only operated under the Aflac name since 1990. At the end of 2004, Aflac was managing more than $ 59 billion in assets.

In 2005, the company logo was changed to incorporate the duck known in the United States into the logo. Aflac was best known for his television advertisement in the United States that featured a duck.
