history

According to its own information, the association was founded in 1942. However, other sources speak of an official foundation under the name ATSV Zell am See in 1946. In any case, the club took part in the Salzburg championship for the first time in the 2nd class south in the season 1946/47 . The workers gymnastics and sports club won the championship title of this class in the following season 1947/48 and qualified in the subsequent round of promotion to the Salzburg state class with second place behind the Upper Austrian club ATSV Mattighofen and ahead of the newly founded ATSV Puch near Hallein for the at that time the highest league in Salzburg football. With the last rank in 1952, the club began to dissolve and had to stop playing.

After a year, the club was reactivated and now took part in the championship again as ASV Zell am See. In 1958, the workers' sports club achieved the championship title in the regional class south and, associated with it, promotion to the two-part Tauern League , which at that time was the second level on an amateur basis alongside the professionally run State League B. Here the people from Bergstadt played against well-known clubs such as SV Austria Salzburg , SAK 1914 , ASK Salzburg and the 1st Hallein sports club . With the introduction of the Regionalliga West in the 1959/60 game year, the Zeller had to go one step lower in the regional league. In 1962 they relegated to 1st class south at short notice , but in the following year immediately celebrated the championship title in front of TSV St. Johann im Pongau and thus belonged again to the third class regional league . In 1968, the win of the regional league and promotion to the regional league could be celebrated again. However, ASV Zell am See was unable to compete with the clubs in the second tier and found itself in a relegation battle every year. With the relegation from the regional league in the 1970/71 season, the company began to concentrate more on youth work and gradually introduced new structures throughout the club, which served as the foundation for later successes.

In 1981 the football club, which has now been renamed FC Zell am See, won the Salzburg League and celebrated its return to the Regionalliga West. With a team made up mostly of domestic players, the Zellern team managed to qualify for the 2nd division of the Bundesliga with third place . There, the Bergstadt team convinced with good performances and were able to challenge the top clubs in the league such as the Favoritner AC , Vorwärts Steyr , Flavia Solva and the Baden AC . Too many games were narrowly lost due to their weakness in finishing. In the final accounts, however, the Zeller could show six wins and eleven draws, compared to only 13 defeats. Nevertheless, they missed relegation by two points and had to close the second Bundesliga chapter again.

In the following years, FC Zell am See played in the regional league and the regional league or Salzburg league. Due to numerous league reforms in the 1980s and 1990s, the club's class membership changed several times. In the 2003/04 season , FC Zell am See again won the regional league and rose to the regional league. However, it was relegated to the regional league after only one season.

After the termination of the 2019/20 season, due to the economic damage caused by the Covid 19 pandemic , the decision was made to withdraw the combat team from the Salzburg League with immediate effect and to dare to start again in 2nd class south / west.
