The Austrian Football Championship 1967/68 was organized directly by the Austrian Football Association . The regional leagues east ( Vienna , Lower Austria , Burgenland ), middle ( Upper Austria , Styria , Carinthia ) and west ( Salzburg , Tyrol , Vorarlberg ) served as the foundation for the first-class national league . The respective national leagues of the federal states acted as the third performance level.

First performance level - national league

General

The championship in the national league was contested with 14 teams, each of which met twice during the entire season. Rapid was able to repeat the Austrian football championship for the 25th time in the season and thus repeat the championship win of the previous year. The last two teams in the table had to be relegated. This hit First Vienna FC 1894 and WSG Radenthein, who were no longer represented in the first division in the next season. These teams were replaced by the three champions of the regional leagues WSV Donawitz (center), SC Wacker Wien (east) and SV Wattens (west) - so there were 15 first-class teams in the following year.
As an Austrian champion, Rapid was able to qualify for the European Cup of National Champions in 1969 , where the club made it to the quarter-finals. After a 3-1 win at Rosenborg Trondheim , however, there was only a 3: 3 in the second leg, which actually didn't bode well for the next task, Real Madrid - but it was the "royal" in the Prater Stadium with 1-0 to defeat - it was a 2-1 defeat in Madrid on December 4, 1968, but thanks to the away goals rule, they were promoted. After the 3-0 defeat of Manchester United at Old Trafford (February 26, 1969), with George Best scoring two goals, the chances of progress were nil - more than 0-0 was not possible in the second leg.

The cup finalist GAK took part in the European Cup of Cup winners in 1969 , was eliminated in the first round against the actually weak Dutch team ADO Den Haag (supervisor Ernst Happel ) (initially a 1: 4 in the Zuiderpark Stadium in The Hague, then a home 0: 2). The Wiener Sport-Club and Wacker Innsbruck represented Austria's football in the 1968/69 trade fair cup and also failed there in Round 1: Although the Viennese had won 1-0 at home with a goal by Hans Buzek against Slavia Prague , they showed great weaknesses. So it was not surprising that there was a 5-0 debacle in Edenpark ( Eden Arena ) (even though Slavia was bottom of the table in the ČSSR championship at the time). The Innsbruck team had Eintracht Frankfurt as their opponent and continued the series, according to which no Austrian team had been able to eliminate one from the Federal Republic of Germany. After the 0-0 at Tivoli in Innsbruck, the return game ended on October 1, 1968 in the Waldstadion with a clear 3-0 for the Hessians overseen by Erich Ribbeck .

useful information

The Viennese Rapid could largely dominate the championship and cup with their Danish goalgetter Jørn Bjerregaard . Also in the championship cup, reaching the quarter-finals - Real Madrid were thrown out of the competition - was a remarkable success. The 25th championship win also meant not only a national anniversary, Rapid also became a continental European record champion . In the following 14 years, however, the Hütteldorfer went empty-handed in the championship. Austria's oldest football club, First Vienna FC 1894, was on the relegation zone - it had been first class throughout since 1919.

statistics

Rapid was ahead in all the tables: the first half of the season was won with 42:10 goals and 22 points ahead of local rivals Austria (23:11: 19), the second half of the season with 23:14 and 22 points ahead of Innsbruck (24:14; 19). In the home balance, the Green-Whites have 48: 9 goals and 24 points (one defeat, and between 1: 2 in the "great Vienna derby" on March 9, 1968), Innsbruck as second had no defeat, but 5 draws, this resulted in 26:14 goals and 21 points. Away the goal difference was 27:15, there were 21 points - Austria was back in second place (20: 8; 18).
As for the question of relegation, the table was not that clear after the autumn: Vienna, Eisenstadt and Radenthein were in the last 3 places with 8 points each, but LASK in 7th place only had 12 points. In the spring, Vienna and Radenthein were only able to score 7 points - it is almost logical that these two clubs are at the bottom of both the home and away tables: At home the Carinthians got 10 points, Vienna 8 - away from Vienna (with 7 points) third from bottom, while both Admira (without a win at all!) And Radenthein only managed 5.
In the 182 matches, 536 goals were scored and 19 players were excluded.

Others

  • The draw of the National League took place on July 10th, with the first round on the weekend of 19./20. August and the 13th round on 2/3 December was scheduled.
  • On April 19, 1968, the ORF broadcast a National League game live for the first time in five years, namely that of FK Austria Wien against Vienna, which was played at Wacker-Platz in Meidling from 4.30 p.m. and was brought forward to this Friday for the purpose of broadcasting . For the time being, the broadcast of Rapid Vienna against Grazer AK was planned for this day , but Rapid did not play until April 20th. This match broadcast was a kind of rehearsal for both the ORF and the national league clubs for the ten direct broadcasts planned for the upcoming championship on Friday afternoon / evening, for which ORF paid 250,000 schillings. The main question was to what extent the TV broadcast would influence the number of visitors to the stadiums; the ORF was concerned with whether the investment was worth it.

    Regional League East

In the Regionalliga Ost, SC Wacker Wien fixed the championship title. Mattersburg didn't really need to get down; The Burgenlanders were on a non-relegation place, but they decided not to participate in the Regionalliga Ost (they switched to amateur operations and played in the regional league). This also meant that the championship 1968/69 had to be drawn again.

    Regional league middle

WSV Donawitz secured the championship title in the Regionalliga Mitte. For a long time, the Klagenfurt AC had been involved in the fight for the title (after the autumn only fourth place with 18 points and 22:16 goals), but in the final sprint they even lost the third place they had held in the meantime. Donawitz, with 19 points and 29:17 goals after the autumn, tied ahead of VÖEST Linz (22:13) and Rosental (26:18), did not have a great start in the second half of the season (including 3-2 defeat at VÖEST in the 17th Round (March 31)), but from and including the 18th round - apart from a 1-1 home draw against Hönigsberg on May 26th - there was no loss of points, while the competitors took points away from each other, with the title dreams of VÖEST ended with a 0-1 home win against Kapfenberg with 3 rounds to go.
Already before the penultimate lap Grieskirchen had already broken away, for St. Valentin on June 13th in the direct duel against nitrogen Linz a 1-1 was too little. Wels managed a surprising 1-0 victory in Kapfenberg, which resulted in 19 points. In the last round, however, only a 1-1 home win against Hönigsberg could be achieved, so that they stayed behind nitrogen (0: 1 at Klagenfurt AC), but due to the much worse goal difference, relegation was only theoretically possible anyway.

    Regional League Carinthia

In Carinthia, the Wolfsberger AC , also known as WAC, was able to fix the championship title.
A preliminary decision was made in the 17th round, when the hosts won 1-0 in the direct duel on Wolfsberger Boden on May 4th and came close to one point and then didn't lose any more points, while Ferndorf in the derby against SV Spittal (May 23rd ) played after 2-2 deficit. The championship ended on June 13, but there was an important addendum on June 16, including: between Ferndorf against Kühnsdorf with a 6-1 victory for the hosts, which was too little to overtake the WAC. A 10-0 win would have been necessary.
