The Haaglandse Football Club Alles Door Oefening Den Haag , or ADO Den Haag for short , is a professional football club from The Hague in the Netherlands . The abbreviation ADO stands for “Alles Door Oefening” ( German for  “Everything through practice” ). Many fans continue to use the old club name FC Den Haag. The club colors are green and yellow. The stork appears in the club's coat of arms, which is also featured in The Hague's city coat of arms.

history

The club was founded on February 1, 1905 as the Haagse Sportvereniging "Alles door Oefening" and was approved by royal resolution No. 45 on April 3, 1957. The club colors at that time consisted of green, red and white. However, these changed again and again over time. In the 1950s, the crew wore white pants and red shirts with a green V offset. The stork contained in the club's logo represents the relationship with the city of The Hague. This also has the bird as a heraldic animal. In the early years, the club had little financial support. Football was often just a secondary sport and did not have the status it is today. In 1912 it was incorporated into the NVB, the predecessor of the KNVB . At that time, the club was third class and was able to win this league for the first time in 1914.

In 1926 ADO had the opportunity to play first class. For this elimination games against DHC Delft and Ajax Sportler Combination were necessary. The club prevailed and played in the top Dutch league from then on. The Hague had a hard time there and was mostly in the lower table region. However, by the late 1930s, a good competitive team was developing. In 1942 and 1943, when there was no professional football in the Netherlands, the club became national champions.

In 1962 ADO became Ernst Happel's first coaching station , who stayed with the club until 1969. He demanded " pressing " and a total offensive from his players . He demanded from his enthusiastic and fit players that they "impose their style on the opponent and not let him relax". Thus ADO developed from a relegation candidate to a title contender. Already in 1963, 1964 and 1966 he and his troops were in the final of the Dutch Cup , where they lost out against Willem II and Fortuna 54 on penalties and against Sparta . In 1968 ADO finally won the trophy with a 2-1 final win over AFC Ajax . In 1967 ADO Den Haag took part as the San Francisco Golden Gate Gales in the championship of the United Soccer Association of the United States , and finished second in the Western Division behind Wolverhampton Wanderers, masked as Los Angeles Wolves, among six participants.

Old FC Den Haag logo

On July 1, 1971, the company merged with the professional division of Holland Sport Den Haag and was temporarily called FC Den Haag-ADO to become HFC ADO Den Haag (1996) via the name FC Den Haag (1976). In the 1960s and 1970s, The Hague was one of the strongest teams in the Netherlands. In the 1960s, the national player Lex "Sexy Lexie" Schoenmaker was active there. The KNVB-Pokal , the Cup of the Netherlands, was won in 1968 and 1975 . The 1980s saw a relapse, and from 1992 to 2003 and 2007/08 ADO played second rate.

ADO has made negative headlines for a long time (1982: arson in the stadium) due to the behavior of some supporters. On November 18, 2006, the home game against Vitesse Arnheim had to be canceled in the 67th minute, because angry fans had stormed the field when the score was 0: 3. Coach Frans Adelaar resigned a day later. The insurance company DSW announced that it would no longer appear as a shirt sponsor with immediate effect.

On May 29, 2011 ADO Den Haag reached the Europa League after an extraordinary second leg in qualifying against FC Groningen , which ended after extra time with a 1: 5 defeat for The Hague. However, since ADO had also won the first leg 5-1, it came to penalties, which the club won with a final score of 4-3.

The Chinese company United Vansen acquired a 98 percent stake in ADO Den Haag in 2015 for $ 8.9 million.

The friendship with Juventus supporters began in the 1988/89 season, a little later (1989) the ties with the East Side group of Club Bruges were tied when the violent scene from The Hague beat the team from Bruges in the first round away game in 1989/90 UEFA Cup against FC Twente Enschede and sparked serious riots. Since then there have been more frequent reciprocal visits when Club Bruges met in risk games against Royal Antwerp , RSC Anderlecht or Standard Liège or Den Haag in similar matches against Ajax Amsterdam or Feyenoord Rotterdam .

The friendship with Legia arose in 1991 when they attended the final match for the European Cup Winners' Cup , for which some Legia fans had already bought tickets before their team failed in the semifinals at the later finalist and tournament winner Manchester United . The final was played in Rotterdam and during their trip some Legia fans also visited the southern Dutch capital, The Hague, where they first came into contact with fans of ADO Den Haag.
