Career

society

ADO The Hague and Feyenoord Rotterdam (2000–2007)

Castelen played from the 2004/05 season as a striker or midfielder at Feyenoord Rotterdam . Before that, he was under contract for four seasons with ADO Den Haag , where he has played in youth since 1998. In the 2000/01 season he made his debut for The Hague in the Eerste Divisie . He came to a total of three missions this year. In the following year, the striker established himself and had regular appearances. With the end of the 2002/03 season, ADO rose to the Eredivisie . After a personally good first season in the top Dutch league, Castelen moved to Feyenoord. In addition to Dirk Kuyt and Salomon Kalou , he was one of the top performers on the offensive in his first year at Rotterdam.

In preparation for the 2006/07 season, Castelen was seriously injured. As a result, he lost his regular place and had only a few appearances for Feyenoord this season. Rotterdam was only seventh in the league and missed qualifying for a European competition.

Hamburger SV (2007-2012)

In the 2007/08 season Castelen moved to Hamburger SV and joined Rafael van der Vaart , Nigel de Jong , Joris Mathijsen and coach Huub Stevens as the fifth Dutchman in the team. He signed a four-year contract until June 30, 2011. Castelen scored his first goal for HSV on August 5, 2007 when he made his debut in the North Derby in the first round of the DFB Cup against Holstein Kiel with a 5-0 final score. In his first season he came on 13 missions.

After a 617-day injury break, Castelen scored his first Bundesliga goal for Hamburger SV against VfL Wolfsburg on August 23, 2009 .

Despite Castelen's frequent injuries, due to which he was able to play only 26 competitive games in four seasons, HSV extended his contract, which expired on June 30, 2011, for another year. In August 2011, after an injury break of almost 24 months, he played another competitive game for Hamburger SV II in the Regionalliga Nord. In that game he scored two goals. Castelen also made a good impression in the second team over the next few weeks. On September 23, Castelen celebrated his comeback in the Bundesliga after two years in a 2-1 away win against VfB Stuttgart when he came on for Heung-Min Son in the 82nd minute . As a result, there were other minor injuries, which is why Castelen only came on another short stint against FC Schalke 04 . Finally, HSV decided not to extend its contract, which was due to expire on June 30, 2012. Castelen is a realist and knows that HSV can no longer plan with him. At the end of March, Castelen was transferred to the U-23 by coach Thorsten Fink , because Fink wanted to work with fewer players in training in the relegation battle. On the 33rd match day he was officially adopted after the last home game of the season.

Stations in Russia, the Netherlands, Australia and Asia (2013-2017)

After the season he took part in training with Espanyol Barcelona and FC Red Bull Salzburg . In February 2013 Castelen signed a contract until the end of the 2012/13 season with the Russian first division club Volga Nizhny Novgorod with an option to extend. As twelfth in the table, the club managed to stay up. Castelen completed only two missions.

In July 2013 he moved back to his home country for the RKC Waalwijk . Castelen came to the club from Waalwijk on regular assignments and was relegated with the RKC from the Eredivisie. On July 20, 2014, Castelen signed with the Australian association Western Sydney Wanderers until June 30, 2017 . In Castelens' first season in the Australian professional league, Western Sydney Wanderers finished penultimate in the table, in the following season they qualified for the final round and reached the final there, in which they were defeated by Adelaide United . Castelen played over 90 minutes in the final. On July 13, 2016, he signed with the South Korean club Suwon Samsung Bluewings . At the end of the 2016 season, Castelen managed to stay up with the club. On January 12, 2017 Castelen moved to the Chinese second division club Zhejiang Yiteng and shot the 2017 season in second place in the table with them.

Return to the Eredivisie (2018–)

After only 23 appearances, VVV-Venlo announced Castelen's commitment in his home country on January 9, 2018. With the 15th place in the table, the club based on the border with Germany managed to stay in the league. Castelen came to 14 missions.
